QOTD: For those that want to be or are SAHM, what do you plan to do when the baby is older?

Just curious what your plans are once the baby is in school or even entirely grown up?

Will you be able to go back into your industry as a professional or do you plan on getting a whole new job? Or do you plan on never working again?

Just curious.

I'm home now, but not as a mom...(and not permanently)

I think I'd always need some kind of work to keep me busy (though I've been doing well these last few months).

I'm considering a career with my father in real estate appraisal (once we come back to NY). I'd make my own hours and work from home (except when I'm out looking at houses) so its entirely flexible to my schedule - I can work more or less as my schedule allows.

I'm also interested in doing floral arrangements - maybe part-time or from the house. I also like the idea of working in the school district my kids are in (my mom did that and it was great having her around) - if not as a teacher, maybe an admin role or counselor.

I'd be happy if I never went back to my old career.

I don't know if I will ever be a SAHM - it will truly be based on finances. But I wish I could be a SAHM until my child(ren) reach school age. Then for me I would go back to work. I think I would be bored at home. My only concern would be finding a 'flexible' job so that I could be home when my kids are home from school. (I know that is pretty unlikely - why are corporations so family unfriendly?!?)

lisa...I picture you with one of those baby backpacks...taking the baby out to appraise something...like three men and a baby...

my ideal would be that I could make a career out of writing...then I could work and stay at home

but I think I would try to get a PT job at a university/CC/maybe even a HS to teach

If I ever have the opportunity to be a sahm, I'd probably go back to teaching when my child is in first grade.
I wouldn't want to work for his/her kindergarten year, because there are too many fun field trips and classroom volunteering opportunities.

I would love to be a SAHM if we can do it financially when the time comes. I am getting my MBA in the hopes I will be able to consult from home when this happens..

If I can't stay at home, then my kid will be watched by my Mom- (I was watched by my Grandma when my Mom was working @ night- she's a musician)... so atleast I can keep it in the family.

I would be a lot more torn if I had to do day care because I'm not really a big fan of strangers raising my kids.

Although I have my dream job at the moment....there is no way I can work in my field when I have kids. Long, crazy hours and & travelling is very common. Both my husband & I agree that I will stay at home when we have kids which will probably be 3-4 years from now.

As a tenured teacher I am entitled to taking time off and then returning. I think currently the max is two years off but many times ladies get preggo again at the end of the two year period and end up extending it to 4+ years.

I am in need of a real career change but it is so hard due to finances. But a girl can hope.

I would love to be a stay at home mom until my kids go to High school and then have a catering business from the house. Dare to dream!

Im a teacher, so I will go back to work, it is very hard nowadays to have just one income.
I will stay at home as long as possible.

I hope I'm able to be a SAHM at least temporarily, but once the kids are in school FT I'd probably look to go back to work at least part time. It will all depend on where we are financially. I'm not sure I'd want to continue to stay home - I could see myself getting bored over time.

I can take time off in my field and then re-enter, as long as I keep up to date with the basics. My company doesn't offer ANY decent part time work or flexible schedules, so unfortunately my PT work might be a few steps down - who knows by then.

I researched what it would take to become a guidance counselor for a school system so I'd have the nicer schedule, but I'd have to go back and get my master's. If you have to work FT as a parent, teaching/school related is the schedule to have!!!

Im not sure when I'll start teaching. It all depends on the timing of my schooling and future pregnancies ... So I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. But I definately plan to teach and stay in the field of Education. Maybe summers, teach @ summer camps while my kids are @ camp (not every summer!).

I cant picture myself being home with kids in school. Even though there is PLENTY to do at home, as much as I never thought there was, I still would want to have a job. I am even thinking of something part time now..

Sorry I babbled...

Stef-what are your thoughts on this? Nice to see youre asking a baby-related question!

The reason why I asked is b/c I see so many saying they would like to be SAHM but I dont see how that works once the kids are older. But it seems like Im in the minority on that since in my current field there would be zero chance of me coming back after a several year absence unless I wanted to take a huge pay cut. I guess most of the girls here dont have that issue. So I was just curious what everyone plans on doing when that time comes.

I feel like i have worked too long and hard to get to a good place in my career. I dont know if I could handle starting all over again years later.

Not that its an issue for me at this point.

I know what you mean about that. When I was out of work for 5months in the computer field, headhunters would ask right away why I was out of work for 'sooo long' ... you have to keep up with whats new in your field if you plan to return to it.

A friend of mine self-taught himself java (While unemployed), took the exam (to be certified in it) and aced it, now hes going for his masters in Tech., unfortunately he's still unemployed, nothing decent coming his way, but he's trying to stay on top of whats new in the field... he's constantly doing programming at home, does small projects on his own, creates websites, etc etc...

Life has a way of working out for everyone

Good question.

I would think I would like to work at least part time. I couldn't imagine staying home all day while my kids are grown.

If we could afford the luxury of me being a SAHM, I would definitely do it for as long as possible. Once the kids are in school, there is plenty to do as far as being involved with their academics and extra-curriculars. If they grew too old to 'need' me on a regular basis, I would probably start a new career since I don't really love what I'm doing now anyway.

Stef, I used to feel just like you do. I couldn't imagine putting SO much time, money, and effort into my career, and then leaving it, even for a few years.

Now that I'm actually pregnant, I WISH I had the luxury of being able to be home with my baby.
You may change your mind.

Re: QOTD: For those that want to be or are SAHM, what do you plan to do when the baby is older?

I have to agree with the changing of mind thing that Jenn said. Im sure I might not mind being a soccer mom after all, LOL (staying home when kids are home) and as far as time invested into careers, you will see what weighs more in your life as you cross each bridge. Although I still want my Masters and PhD, all the time I invested in my past career choices (retail and computer fields) I feel was well worth it at the time, it made me a stronger, more independent and well rounded mom. I think everything you do in life, is for a reason, NOTHING is wasted, it's amazing how all your experiences will serve you well, even if you change careers, you will add something to your current life that no one else can, based on where you cam from.
So to anyone 'on the fence' about it, ya never know, dont be afraid of change, and dont be surprised if you think totally differently 5 years from now....

Tangent end
