Question to my bakers
I want to make some chocolate cover oreos this weekend for my litte girls bday party. Her theme is Dora so most of the colors are going to be orange and pink. Do I just buy the food coloring and mix it to the chocolate? Also is there a specific chocolate I need to buy.As you can see, I have never done this before.

Re: Question to my bakers
hey!Go to Michaels and get Wiltons Candy melts. I made cake pops recently and used these and they came out amazing!!!!
Just throw them in a bowl and microwave them for like a minute and VOILA! They come in every color you can think of! Red, Blue, Pink, Orange, Yellow, white, ETC. It's all different color chocolates. Some are vanilla flavored chocolate (still just as yummy)!
candy melts
Let me know how they come out! HTH!

this!!! You could probably color white chocolate chips. If you go the white chocolate route, just add some butter to the chocolate so it doesnt crack when hardened, its a little softer.

Re: Question to my bakers
definitely buy the colored chocolate. its just white chocolate thats been dyed, but it will come out the perfect shade. if you use food coloring it may not come out the right color you had hoped for.

Re: Question to my bakers
i used the candy melts too, but i used them for halloween to make tombstones and skeleton bones. not the best candy to eat as a hard chocolate, but if you are just drizzling chocolate over something, then these would be great!if you are looking to make cupcakes or something and just want the frosting to be a color - then you should buy vanilla/white frosting and add food coloring.

they came out OK for first time. the chocolate was pretty smooth. my only mistake was - i should have put the stick in them and then put them in the freezer for a few. i put the stick in them and them dipped them. some came out perfect. others were damaged and had to be eaten right away

here's a pic

Here's a pic:
yours came out nice and smooth looking! i used the microwave. i think i need more than 1 bag and a deeper bowl. i didn't freeze mine either and some were falling off and i ate like 3 by the time i finished
I read that if you put shortening, it helps with making it smoother. i borrowed my sister's double boiler so i'm going to test it next week. here's mine
ETA that the sprinkles helped cover the unsmooth chocolate flaw

Thanks for the shortening tip! Yours came out awesome!!! I got like 6 bags of the candy stuff and put them in a deeper bowl. you are supposed to fully submerge the cake pop. I watched/used this video as a guide-

Re: Question to my bakers
If you do color the whites make sur ethey are candy coloring. Regular food coloring will ruin the chocolates.

Re: Question to my bakers
I make cake pops all the time. I bought these bowls in micheals that are small and deep. I find mine come out more smooth when I tap my arm to get the excess chocolate rather then tapping the pop on the side of the bowl. I also use vegetable oil to thin out the chocoalte. And like someone else said - use sprinkles and what not to cover the flaws.Cake pops are like my new obsession. I read the cake pop book by bakerella and all her tips are super helpful.

Re: Question to my bakers
You could go to Grandma's Candy Kitchen in Wantagh - They sell real chocolate in ANY color you want.Real chocolate is more expensive than the candy melts, and I personally think it tastes better, but I usually decide on the occasion as to which I'm going to use.

I would get like 4 bags just to be on the safe side. you might only use 1. better to have more than not enough!
They were on sale last time i was there - $1.50/bag. Score!
