You go to a 1st bithday party- do you expect to receive a thank you card when you give a gift?
dh and i are debating this- he thinks no, I think yes. We went to his god-daughter's 1st birthday Saturday- we will not receive a thank you note- I know this because we didnt get one for the mother's baby shower or the baby's christening.
Just wanted to see if it was me!

Re: Quick Poll
In my experience, thank yous are always sent for gifts or attending partys
ETA: I could understand not receiving a thank you for a childrens casual bday party but a shower or christening, not so much

I voted yes...IMO you should always send a TY card whenever you receive a gift...it's just good manners...no offense to the mother, just the way I was raised! I always send TY cards even to my students for giving me silly little cute things!!!

i agree- the mom is a peice of work- I've posted about her before
she left the party and didnt say goodbye to anyone or even thank you- which I would have accepted instead of a thank you note!

Re: Quick Poll
I think just a small note of thanks is appropriate. I agree with you 110%

Re: Quick Poll
i personally would not be expecting one. For me, I only really think Thank Yous are necessary when it comes to significant events. Like if it was a small gathering for a friend's birthday and they open the gift in front of me and say 'Thank you' right then, there's no need to send me a thank you card. But if it's a big party (like an anniversary, a wedding, a shower, or even just a LARGE bday party like for the 30th or 50th) then I can see a card being sent. But for something as small as a child's 1st birthday - I don't think so. But that could just be me.

Re: Quick Poll
Any time a gift is given, a thank you should be written. Unfortunately there are people out there that don't think of it. It just doesn't enter their heads to do it. My mom always had me write thank yous and call people for any gift I got so it just became embedded in my brain. My cousin on the other hand does not do this. But then again neither does his my other cousin (his brother). Maybe my aunt didn't drill it in their heads

Re: Quick Poll
TY cards are always appropriate if a gift is given. In the case of a 1 year old, then either parent can write the gift.
My opinion is that sending out TYs has become so casual. Parents don't encourage children to write them anymore. Growing up, I had to write TY cards to my grandma and aunts in German because they didn't speak or read English. My own sis doesn't encourage her children to write them. It just bugs me....especially after the way we were brought up.

so do i, at least from one sister's kids, and personally i think it's too much. I mean, they are little kids... they thank me then and there when they open the present. to me that's enough but I just don't think it's necessary; I am fine with the big kiss and hug i get the day of.
for a 1st birthday though - maybe if it's at a place or something? I have typically gotten thank yous after 1st bdays, christenings etc. I think that's just standard.

I'm lying. I just realized that all of them send thank yous for their birthdays - I forgot about the picture thank yous that are always on my fridge!
I am not the queen of etiquette so I'd probably disregard my answer or opinion.

if it was a huge fancy 1st bday party then i would say yes, otherwise - i think it's a nice gesture but i wouldn't be expecting one.

Re: Quick Poll
My brothers and I always had to send written thank yous for any gifts we received regardless of the occasion or formality of the party. IMO, it's just the polite thing to do.

Re: Quick Poll
I expect thank yous for every gift I give at a party. I would never throw a party for my baby (when I have one) and NOT send thank yous to people who came. EVER.
