Really weird DMV question...

Boy I effed this up for myself. So, I've never had a driver's license. I know how to drive, but I don't own a car, don't plan to buy one, and take public transportation everywhere. When I needed ID, I got a learner's permit since I planned to eventually get my license. Well, lazy me, I didn't change my name at the DMV, only at SS office. Now, my permit has expired. Apparently, you can only renew a permit if you had taken the written test less than 2 years ago. It's definitely been more than 2 years, more like 6, so I have to reapply for an entirely new learner's permit.

But, my question is, do I apply under my maiden name or my married name? I'm assuming married name, but won't they be like 'Hey, that's not the same name on your old permit?' If anyone can answer this question, I applaud you! TIA!

Re: Really weird DMV question...

i *think* you just have to go there and fill out some paperwork.
I didn't know that they re-tested you for a new one.
you could just get an ID card.
why don't you call or email the DMV?

I think as long as your SS card says your married name you are fine. I THINK.

Re: Really weird DMV question...

do you really need a learner's permit? as Megan said, maybe you could just get an ID card instead?

otherwise, i'd assume you apply with your current name .... there may be a section for 'previous names' somewhere which will help the DMV figure out who you are

Well, now I really do want to get my license. I told my yoounger sister I would take classes with her. The test isn't really an issue for me, I don't mind taking it, the name thing is the crux for me. Especially since I assume it would be the same issue with a non-driver's ID card. I planned on bringing my SS card and my marriage license anyway, so hopefully that'll be enough.

I'll call them first but you know what it's like calling them!

Re: Really weird DMV question...

if you legally changed your name at SS then you apply with your new name. Since you are reapplying it should be the same. there should be a section that says 'did you have a previous name' or something to that extent and you write your old (maiden) name there.

Okay, thanks. For some reason, the DMV makes me break out into hives. I hate that place.

Re: Really weird DMV question...

I had major issues when I went to the DMV - bring your SS card and your marriage license, and you will have to put your permit # on it and you can put your maiden name. They should be able to find you from your permit #.

Thank you!!! I will bring everything under the sun. I'm even considering changing my passport before I go there so I can bring that as additional proof. Thanks again!
