Snoring, Hubby and YOU

Snoring, Hubby and YOU

Anyone's DH snore to the point that some nights you just gotta leave the room? If so, how does it affect (or not affect) your relationship. DH feels sorry that he keeps me up some nights, but also gets sad when he wakes to not see me there.

Have him try those nose things they sell in CVS. They're supposed to open the airway and help elliminate snoring.

DH uses them. It's called Breathe Right. It opens up the nasal passage. He also likes to keep the house somewhat cool at night, it helps him to breathe better.

I'm feelin ya....I leave the room sometimes, or he does when I get 'evil'.

I sleep with earplugs EVERY night. We wouldn't be able to be together in bed without them!!

Yeah - I may have to resort to those. He's tried those strips - to no avail.

OMG - yes!!! I love my husband but the snoring has been out of control and then there's been a little sleep apnea (sp?) mixed in, so I get to 'nudge him alive' every few hours

He went to a doctor (the Breathe Right strips didn't help at all) and the doctor recommended some OTC nasal stuff, that he get a humidifier for the bedroom, and that he go to a sleep clinic!

I bought some ear plugs yesterday since he can't use the nose stuff every night and that helped me a bit but it felt weird to have stuff in my ears all night. Not sure what to do....

I have to leave the room to sleep on the futon in the living room. Luckily, it usually isn't that bad, or more for one night in a row.

same here. we start out ok but he usually ends up leaving the room it's awful! so loud.... I just can't understand how he can sleep through it.

those breathing strips do not work at all. at least not for him.

My DH snores terribly and I am a very light sleeper with an overactive bladder, so when I have to get up every 2-3 hours to go potty, I can't fall back to sleep with him. I sleep with ear plugs AND I end up on the coach almost every night. It is so sad, but sleep deprivation is worse.

He gets upset, but then he rolls over and sprawls out across the bed!!

I don't think he is missing me that much

Wow! I'm really NOT alone, am I?

We girls chuckle about it, but sometimes it really is serious. Personally, I wound up having to stay home one day this week just to get some SLEEP because I was so sleep deprived. I'm going to very gently recommend that sleep clinic to hubby.

Thanks girls!

It is definitely good to know I am not alone!!

we want a king size bed. I think once we have a bigger bed and a louder white noise (like from a box fan) we'll be ok. I HATE it when we don't sleep together

I know! It sux! But like someone else said, sleep deprivation is worse. When I try to do a day's work on like only 3 hours of sleep, I'm nauseated for the entire day.

I agree with you! there is little else that's worse than sleep deprivation!

Before I got married, this was one of my biggest fears, b/c he was a huge snorer. And I hated sleeping at his house, b/c it was a waste of sleep for me, b/c I never was able to. But I dont know what the hell happened, but he sure doesnt snore as much as he used to. But I will tell you what has worked tremendously in the past.

* He quit smoking
* He put a humidifier in his room (it was so dry so the moisture I think is what he needed
*When he is on his side or stomach, I usually dont hear a peep.

Its when he is on his back, that the tree chompers come out. But all I do is nudge him and say 'turn to your side', and he does it right away......LOL

Good luck, I definitely know what you are going through!!!

I usually nudge him to roll over, he seems to snore the loudest on his back

Same here. But I've been using earplugs so it's been a million times better. And he doesn't snore too terribly. I'm just very sensitive to noise when I sleep (unless it's the TV)!

Re: Snoring, Hubby and YOU

This was a HUGE problem for DH and I. He has sleep apnea (stops breathing, gasps for air, very restless) and it was a big bone of centention for us ... who sleeps on the couch? Who's angrier - me for being woken up every 5 minutes or him because I am shaking him awake every 10 minutes?

He finally went to a sleep clinic and was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea (which I knew all along) and he now sleeps with a machine every night. It forces oxygen into his nose and keeps his nasal passages open. During the study, they discovered he woke up 243 times in a 2 hour period ... that accounts to about every 30 seconds his body would 'jerk awake' from not breathing. They calculated that in a 7-hour period, he only gets 2 hours of rest.

It's a very serious issue and can cause major health problems (heart disease, stroke, weight gain). He was very very very reluctant to sleep with the machine, who wouldn't be? It's like standing in front of a fan at full speed, it's very hard to catch your breath at first, but as he got used to it, he now realized the importance of getting a full nights rest.

Right before Christmas one of the pieces broke and he couldn't use the machine for an entire week, he was exhausted and misreable. i think it was then it finally dawned on him that the machine is a catch-22 .. while he hates having to wear it, he cannot live without it.

We still have normal snorning issues sometimes - the mask can come off, if his head is tilted back too far, if he's splayed on his back without a pillow ... it all accounts for closing the nasal passages and I have to nudge him to roll over or fix the mask.

It has a made a huge difference in our lives. I no longer am angry at him at 2 a.m. I no longer cry from lack of sleep at 4 a.m. I no longer have to get up in the middle of the night and make a bed on the couch or worse, kick him out of the bedroom so that I can have the bed.

There was a segment on Ch. 4 Today's Show last week about couples that sleep in separate beds or separate rooms because one of the spouses was horrible to sleep with. I thought it was interesting to see how many couples in America do this. It was also interesting to see the views of the experts who say it's good or bad to do that. I want to stay in the same room and in the same bed as DH, we found a way to make that work.

Good Luck ladies, I know how hard it is to get a good night's rest and I know how frustrating 3 a.m. can be!
