So we've all been there, but...

So we've all been there, but...

So I'm invited to a shower for the FW of one of DH's friends. This was his neighbor growing up, and MIL is also good friends with his mother. The mother and FW came to my shower, and gave a joint gift, one of my fine china settings, which we returned, so we know how much was spent with the coupon. I assumed that her FMIL just put her name on it and footed the gift. It was my first time meeting both of them at my shower, and then they came to the wedding.

So the girl is from OOT, and the wedding is OOT, but we are all going. She is having a shower in her home state, and a shower here. Her home shower is before her NY shower. I just received the invitation yesterday, and checked her registries, and obviously everything is fulfilled, because the other shower guests OOT had a head start.

Everything that is left is really out of my price range, especially I think for someone that I've only met twice. I feel like it would be inappropriate of me to ask MIL to just put my name on her gift, since she'll be putting SIL's name on it with hers, and I know how slighted I felt when I got a gift signed from 12 people. But there's nothing appropriately priced for my level of acquaintance left on the registries...

So do I go off registry, the total shower taboo? I'm at a loss here...I don't know the girl well enough to use my judgement, and they already live together so I'm sure they have plenty of basics already.

Gift card! I think that is the only solution here. I am sure she doesn't expect little old you to buy her a $300 shower gift.

yup - gift card all the way!

Since when is going off registry totally taboo?

I guess I still have a lot to learn...

Anyway, I'd go off registry. Some of my favorite gifts were the things friends who had recently been married didn't find on my registry but had on their own and loved -- things I hadn't thought of or hadn't realized would be so ridiculously useful! Some of the most thoughtful presents on the ones that you don't ask for.

I'd give her something (reasonably priced) that you love having that wasn't on her registry. It's so super thoughtful and she'll actually be surprised when she opens it!

I love this mindy weiss ring holder -- it's something I splurged on for myself and am still using (it's only $16!):

This was a little pricier but I got it for a friend whose registry was all full (or way too expensive) for her shower the year before mine:

She gave me a cast iron griddle from Crate & Barrel that I absolutely LOVE that wasn't on my registry -- it was actually the same price as the album. :)

hate to crash..

but what about making a little basket?

i was in williams sonoma last night, and they had these amazing 'starter' kits to make different stews, chilis, tacos, soups, roast, etc.. you basically just add meat..

they had a really cute set made up with 2 jars and a wooden spoon-not that expensive but something i think is really cute at a shower

Thanks, I'll probably just do a Macy's GC and a wishing well gift and call it a day...at least then she can use it towards some of the more big ticket items.

That is a really cute idea, but their invites didn't go out yet.

Agreed. I got a few gift cards at my shower and also had some things that needed to be returned (doubles and such) I used the store credits and the gift cards to get the things that weren't bought off my registry and some others I hadn't thought to register for. It was nice to spend the day shopping but not spend any money!

I would either do a gift card or a nice basket or tote like some of the girls suggested.

I would say gift card so she can maybe put it towards some of those items that are higher priced.
