So we've all been there, but...

Original post by coldasice217

So I'm invited to a shower for the FW of one of DH's friends. This was his neighbor growing up, and MIL is also good friends with his mother. The mother and FW came to my shower, and gave a joint gift, one of my fine china settings, which we returned, so we know how much was spent with the coupon. I assumed that her FMIL just put her name on it and footed the gift. It was my first time meeting both of them at my shower, and then they came to the wedding.

So the girl is from OOT, and the wedding is OOT, but we are all going. She is having a shower in her home state, and a shower here. Her home shower is before her NY shower. I just received the invitation yesterday, and checked her registries, and obviously everything is fulfilled, because the other shower guests OOT had a head start.

Everything that is left is really out of my price range, especially I think for someone that I've only met twice. I feel like it would be inappropriate of me to ask MIL to just put my name on her gift, since she'll be putting SIL's name on it with hers, and I know how slighted I felt when I got a gift signed from 12 people. But there's nothing appropriately priced for my level of acquaintance left on the registries...

So do I go off registry, the total shower taboo? I'm at a loss here...I don't know the girl well enough to use my judgement, and they already live together so I'm sure they have plenty of basics already.

Totally get them a gift card to where they registered.
