I just got a call from our travel agent that the escorted tour we had planned for several months to Italy has been canceled by the tour company! Apparently (which I already knew), the time we are going in August is when a lot of Italians take vacations, but I'm assuming a lot of tourists go since it's the summer. Well several tour companies canceled their tours during the week we are going. This is the only week we can go because of my work schedule.
Our travel agent is trying to plan an independent tour for us to all the same places, but i don't know how comfortable i feel about traveling around italy without a tour guide who speaks the language!!!
what would you do??

I'd book a cruise around italy instead-carnival has a really great mediterraen one and the prices last I checked were reasonable

This doesn't suprise me one bit. They go on strike for 8 hours at a time too. So stupid! Where in Italy were you planning to go? You can still go to the sites. There are tour guides at places that speak English. It is really easy to get around.

i know it's nice, but you really don't need a guided tour. get a really good tour book and do it yourself. I've never done a guided tour on a vacation and never have problems. and a lot of the main cities speak english.

yeah that's what everyone is telling me. DH and I are still nervous about it, but a lot of family and friends have given us books, so we probably could plan it ourselves. i'm waiting to hear back from our agent to see what kind of tour she put together for us. we were going to rome, venice and florence and there were a few excursions in between.
