Spending question.....does anyone's DH

give them a hard time about $$?

We really have not bought anything for the past year and a half because of the wedding. Now we are realizing we REALLY need fall clothes, shoes, etc...I need stuff for work, etc.

I feel like every time I go shopping I am going to get yelled at for spending - so I told him the other day, well then fine, we need to set a montlhy budget of what I can spend freely without you questioning it.

Does anyone else and their DH do this?

We agreed it may work for us since we are always arguing about spending.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

I am lucky here in that he doesn't bother me at all. In fact I think he spends too much sometimes, but he's an adult and knows what he is doing and knows the consequenses. This is provided that all bills and goals are met during the month.

When we combined all of our finances and expenses, based on salaries, expenses and saving goals we put the majority of our paychecks in our joint account. THe rest goes into our personal accounts that would be our own money to do what we want with - save, spend, etc.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

No.

As long as the bills are paid and there is money in our savings he cannot tell me anything.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

I think that would work. You know how I am- I usually dont' buy anything- and either does he. We've both been so busy with school and stuff that we haven't had time to shop.

Last weekend we went to Brooks Brothers to get him some new clothes and we wound up returning what we bought b/c it was like $200 for 3 shirts- too much!

So come up with an agreement- like you said- it's probably your best idea... say something like $x for clothes every season change.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

Well, the way I presented it to him was this:

He smokes 1 -2 packs per day. That's $10/day, $70 week right there. $280 roughly a month.

Therefore, my spending 'limit' aka no questions asked, no arguing, should be $300!!

Edited to add:
LOL nrvbrd I love that attitude!!!

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

My husband is ALWAYS encouraging me to shop! I am lucky I guess...but I HATE spending money - I am such a little cheapie. I wait until the last possible minute and then end up spending a fortune all at once. (my cheapness has not changed the fact that I have very expensive taste once I buckle down to buy)

We don't share money though - never have. Even after 10 years! We have separate bank accounts (though I have had to go to him crying poverty because I ran out!!!)

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

Scott has never once yelled at me over spending money and I cannot imagine him doing it. I do all the shopping really- food shopping, CVS runs, b-day gifts etc... He manages the accounts, as I cannot be bothered. We both work and we both put our checks into the same account (although that is only a few months old). But if I go and buy myself a new shirt he has never said anything.
At times he will say 'Honey, go easy I just paid off XX or we still have to get XX' and I respect that.

I am very lucky with this. I never have a problem and when I need or want something, my husband encourages me to go and buy it. He is very good that way.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

My DH is a shopaholic! If he likes something, he buys TWO of them!

He's definitely the spender and I'm the saver. So he never gives me any problems if I buy something, and he often buys things for me. Like Cindy's husband, he encourages me to buy things if I want them.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

My DH doesn't give me a hard time either. We both work and make money and can spend it the way we please. We know our limits and don't go beyond that. However, I have to say I am a very practical person and I rarely shop for very, very expensive clothes, shoes, bags, etc.. Although lovely, I just don't feel I need them and therefore don't buy them. I would never even make a very expensive purchase without consulting him either...just the way I am.

He does like to ask the question - a lot - when I buy something - how much did it cost? he is just a numbers person and for the most part doesn't mean anything by it but it drives me nuts. But in the same token, I can complain I want or like something and he will be encouraging of me to go shopping and buy myself something I want and don't necessarily need...

Future- I like your budget ideas with his cigs! cute and easy solution! Either you help him give up smoking which can't be bad for his health or else you get to shop! Like it!

So is my DH!!

I normally don't care what he spends because like most people you know what you have and what you can afford.

The only time I flipped was when he bought a $100 lighter for when he smokes cigars - which has been about 5 times since I have known him!!

I don't buy too much in the way of clothes & shoes so he encourages me to shop for things like that and isn't concerned with how much it was and he knows I probably won't go crazy spending.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

If we are going to spend a significant amount of $$ then we run it by eachother before...otherwise, he doesn't really bother me. Most of the time, we are shopping for house stuff anyway.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

I don't usually just go out and buy expensive items for myself...even if I did, DH would never say a thing. He encourages me to shop and actually picks out the expensive stuff. He doesn't spend a lot on himself either.

We would both consult each other if we wanted to make an expensive purchase... personal or for the house etc.

I'm thankful he is the way he is!

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

The only thing he has ever said was how many pairs of black shoes does one woman need or where are you going to put another hat He very rarely shops, when he does shop its for computer equip or for others. I buy most of his clothes. We save, we invest and I shop. He usually ask me about more money for investing. Ever since the market took a nose dive, I have lost my drive for it.

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

i guess i am lucky in the sense that he doesn't really mind what i do or buy, but he always does want to know how much it was, like niecey's hubby! i guess he has to since most of my purchases are made on the debit card so... he's not a shopper at all. he's smart in that he waits for me to shop for him! but since we bought thr house, i know myself that i have to be more frugal in my spending. just the way it is...

Re: Spending question.....does anyone's DH

My DH doesn't mind at all. We put out money together into our accounts. I pay all the bills, go food shopping and all the other little things. Sometimes DH doesn't have a clue. When he is going to buy something he usually calls me asks if its ok. Sometimes I yell at him for asking me and I tell him go ahead do what you want you deserve it.
