Spinoff - Baby Costs

Original post by Jenn04

I have been thinking about this alot lately - not because I want a baby yet but I just want to know if we can make it with me staying at home when we do have a baby.

Anyway does anyone know how much 1 baby costs? I found this website and with daycare I got an estimated $12K a year!!!! YIKES! That is just for the first year!

lol. I got $5-6,000 for mine in the first year (I guess since I don't plan on using any kind of childcare).

Dh was saying the other night how his friend at work just became a daddy and he didn't have insurance. He told DH that just to HAVE a baby costs $5,000. Yikes. (I hate that you need insurance to deliver your baby. I feel like it should be 'free' - what our taxes help pay for. Oh well)

This is a great guideline to use for our registry. I unchecked alot of stuff, because I will be getting it at the shower. Wow...cloth diapering really saves alot of money...and it is so much better for the environment.....Im going to look into it.

lol. My mother used clothe for a part of me & my sister's diaper wearing years. I think at least while each of us were infants and nursing. We still have some of 'em in the house that we use as cleaning rags. hehe. But yeah, they're very good for the environment and certainly do save money. It's just a lot of extra work though (having to clean all that ick out of 'em). I think I'm the type who would just have to give up the money and pay for the convenience of just throwing the diaper away after each use. Or maybe I'd do what my mother did, if anything, and just use it while the baby's are still breast feeding. (only reason I say that is b/c cleaning hard poop off of a clothe diaper totally grosses me out. lol. But we'll see)

My friend had her daughter c-section in 2003. The bill was $27k.

My sister had a baby in 07, she has good insurance and is still paying off the hospital bill, i think it was around 6k

She pays about 14k a year in Daycare costs.

Then the cost of diapers, food, my niece is 2, and she can not share off my sisters plate, she eats her entire meal when we go out. Clothing, shoes, Doctor Copays, medicines, my niece was hospitalized once for RSV. And that was a few thousand dollars.

Activities, such as gymboree, joining the pool and beach club by her house for the summer, vacations like disney,

The older they get hte more it costs, with after school activities costing so much, like soccer, gymnastics, football, lacrosse, and all the costs that go into that.

Oh and the things in the house that my niece ruins because she is a baby, and doesnt realize she is breaking things and costing my sister even more money.

ETA: my sister and her husband also invested in Viacord, its that cord blood banking, i think it was around 2500, plus there is a fee every year to store it
I know this is not mandatory, but it is another expense

some women breastfeed for over a year just to save on baby formula. You can cut your costs that way..lol I don't think I can put up with fluids coming out of my tata's more than 3 months 6 max!

it def saves! my SIL was going to try doing that but her baby has acid reflux and has to come off breastmilk soon and go on a special forumla...the special formula is super $$$

i was reading up on 'green' diapers - you know, like cloth diapers!! supposed to save you $$ and be good for the environment but i dont know if i could handle that

a friend of mine said she was going to breastfeed like for a year but she gave that up (baby is 5 month) she says it's too much work to be at work and pump.

Green diapers-I don't think so...yucky...lol

i'm on babycenter all the time and never did this. my baby will cost $7,864, but that's because i put 0 for daycare. we're hoping MIL and FIL will watch the little one - we know she wants to! if not, the total is $12,472.

that would be cheap. I pay $15,000 a year for day care for my 2 year old

now, where is that vomiting icon.....?

ETA - breastfeeding isn't necessarily free either. A good breast pump will run you over $300.

MY DAUGHTER IS 6 NOW, AND THEY DO DEFINITELY ADD UP OVER THE YEARS, BUT TO ME...YOU ARE REALLY NEVER REALLY READY FINANCIALLY FOR A CHILD!! UNLESS YOU ARE DONALD TRUMP!

oh lord, i already feel that way about buying a house between renovating, decorating, furniture i cant imagine adding a kid into the mix

We actually just did and extension on our house too, so we know and between us...we have 2 kids right now, and we're planning on having another very soon!!! every penny counts!

Mine will supposedly run me over 16K and that's because they wouldn't be in daycare 2 months out of the year.

Honestly if we look at this we'll never have children. I know my parents had both my brother and i with a lot less so it's do-able and DH's family had all 6 kids with even less than my family. I think you just figure it out and work out the expenses.

I just wanted to add what my cousin told me ....she was like yes they cost A LOT but she also said that she is not spending money on things they used to ie going out on weekends, out to dinner, entertainment, work clothes, clothers for themselves generally lol

I know for DH and I we spend a fortune on 'entertainment' bw sporting events, vacations, dinners, movies, nights out getting drinkings and on and on....when we have a baby honestly we wont be doing that, I would bet bw him and I all that adds up to AT LEAST 12,000 a year

very true....

i cant remember that last time my SIL and BIL went out for dinner....or to the movies....or to a bar.....or did anything just the two of them....

she says it doesnt bother her - she rather be with the kids then do that stuff anyways....which i think for me will be true, but i hate to not have dates with my husband anymore - i think its still important to keep something going....

but b/c of seeing them, i try to hint to DH that we have to live up for the next year just in case

I'm so thankful for my job and not needing too much in the way of daycare. I work three night shifts a week. My parents will help too. My mom even said she'd babysit while I take classes.

Mine didn't come up to that much...lol I think it was under $3,000. My mom is watching our baby so we are saving So much right there. ANd Iam breastfeeding also. Those two things right there save so much. And for my shower I know I am already getting everything we need, Crib, pack n play, high chair, swig, All of that has already been bought. So nothing for us to really buy. So thank god. But they do get very expensive if you don't have the help.
