I wanted to add that I think the cost is totally worth it! I think kids learn so much growing up with a doggie playmate. about being kind to animals, responsibility, not to mention how adorable kids and dogs are together!

other breeds to consider are havanese & coton de tulear. Both a bit of a sturdier little dog that are good with kids. DH and I almost got one before we got Goober

He's too cute. How about if you share him with me..

not for nothing, do you have family or friends who have a dog you could 'borrow' for a day or weekend? It is a huge commitment! I don't think I could share goober, I thought about both my dogs every day on our honeymoon too obsessed

i might be biased, but i highly recommend cockapoos.

todd is 3 years old and about 25 - 30 pounds (he's a little on the bigger side, lol). he's very affectionate, playful, always wants to snuggle and he has such a personality. everyone always says he's a character. he also doesn't shed at all.

as for expenses, i mean, vet bills def add up, especially if they ever get sick. todd also has allergies, so we have to buy really expensive food.

i think they're totally worth it though; i can't imagine not having him <3

I agree cockapoo's are great dogs with children.

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers

Dogs are definitely a huge commitment but can be super rewarding! You can definitely cut down on the cost of actually buying the dog if you rescue or adopt vs. going through a breeder or something. However, spaying/neutering and vet bills can add up.

I once read the the first year of dog ownership can cost up to $1500 on average and then around $600 a year thereafter.

All of the dog breeds mentioned are definitely more managable types of dogs - not too much shedding, will stay on the smaller side. One thing to consider is the amount of time you will be able to spend with the dig and training it.

My friend has two dogs and they are SOOO misbehaved They are alone for very long periods of time during the day, they have crazy separation anxiety and are very anxious around people and other dogs since they do not have company too often.

DH and I really want a dog as well, but we both work long hours and love to travel, so it really wouldn't be fair to the dog in the end. We'll wait until our lives slow down a bit and the time is right. We have a cat for now, and although it's not even close to the same, she is just the right level of maintenance and lovin' for us

Good luck in your search!!!

ETA: I had a pitbull mix in college and she was the BEST dog ever, so I have a love for bigger dogs. DH grew up with a small dog, so we're holding out for the nice backyard too to let our future medium-sized pup run around!

Thanks for the advice. Totally presenting this to my DH. Didn't even think about who will take care of the dog while we are at work.

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers

If you don't think you will have enough time to spend and train a puppy - look into getting an older dog from a shelter. I'm a big fan of getting rescue animals and not from a breeder. North Shore Animal League is an amazing facility and because they are the largest no kill shelter, they have a lot of animals coming through their doors. That is where we adopted our dog from (wish I could post a picture, but I'm at work). NSAL also offers free spayed & neutering when you adopt an animal from there. They do a good background check on the people adopting an animal, and about after a year, they come and do a home check as well to make sure the animal's living conditions are good. By adopting an older dog, you already get an animal who's house broken and usually trained to some degree and you don't have to be with them all day, like when you are house training a puppy. Even if you don't adopt from there, I would go check it out. Their staff is really friendly & helpful & full of information.

(I promise I don’t work there! Lol)

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers

Okay so I am totally delayed, but I figured I'd give my 5 cents.

We have a mini-schnauzer. I got him for my 21st birthday after many years of asking for a baby brother/sister and settling for a dog....lol.

He is adorable and very friendly, kind, cuddly and not too big. We chose this breed because my mom did not want any dog that sheds. My mom was the least dog friendly person I knew and she LOVES him and other doggies now. Def kids friendly. Max and Jonathan play together all the time!

Re: Spinoff to Dog Lovers

As for cost, it's all relative. Do you want a full breed? Mix? One from a good line of litter or it doesn't matter to you?
