I was just curious...how many of us are actually homeowners ie...own our own house/condo/apartment etc.???
DH and I did things backwards. We purchased our first home 2 years (yup 2 years!) before our actual marriage. We decided it was important to have our own place first to call home and get settled in before we tied the knot.

Same here. We bought our home together before he even proposed. I am so glad we did.
ETA: if DH and I lived in NY there is no way we have been able to afford the kind of house we got. We live in Woodstock GA so we were able to get alot of house for little money. If we were in NY we would be renting I am sure.

Well im jealous of all of you!!!!
we're in a hole! We're both fresh out of collage with 2 huge school loans and we paid for the wedding ourselves i just got my first (well second ) Job in my career field... and DH is a city cop.. so with all that said were broke...
my parents were nice enough to build an apartment in thier house for us to stay close to rent free for as long as we need till we can save up to get a home/condo... i thought it would be uncomfortable but its really not that bad... dont get me wrong i wish we werent here but its working for now and we should hopefully be able to get something with in a year and a half.

We are living in an apartment in my parents' house at the moment. We will start SERIOUSLY house hunting around our two year mark but right now we are looking into a different opportunity with my parents so hopefully that works out first!!
My parents are older and I will be the one taking care of them so for us, it may just make sense to stick with ONE house instead of having two and then having to give one up. We will see what the future holds though and thank goodness they are currently in excellent physical and mental health!

We bought and fixed our house up a year before our wedding....
& o my lord, planning a wedding, doing construction and moving my crap in the week before the wedding...NOT FUN HOWEVER......so glad we did it!

we currently rent. we are trying to decide where we want to live and find something. we looked before we got married but nothing was good in our eyes. all the houses we looked at have now dropped at least $50 to $100K so we are glad that we have waited.

DH was a homeowner before I met him. When we got transferred out here he bought again...and we put my name on the title after we got married.

I would love to buy a house so would dh but we don't make enough to afford a house. I don't want to take a freakish loan out like my friends did and put a low down payment down so we can eat cat/dog food for the rest of our lives or worse yet get foreclosed. So we are trying to save up and have at least 20-30% down payment and if we still can't afford to live in NY we are going to leave.
We rent a two bedroom apartment with everything included for $1,380.00 so i am thinking taxes, heat, elec, water, morg, etc it would be WAY more then that per month and we only can cover that and maybe a hair more. But then again we really don't know very much about houses and mortgages we just go what my brother and parents did.

We bought our home and moved in on our 6-month anniversary! It's a bit stressful in the beginning, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!

We didn't mean to househunt, but wound up doing it the month after the wedding, and signed the contract 3 months before the wedding

Dude, our one bedroom apt is more than that and we still have to pay gas and electric on our own

we just moved in about 2 weeks ago! So we're NEW homewoners. We absolutely love it. I'll let you know how it is when the first mortgage payment is due Sept. 1st!

we live in a condo that we're now trying to sell so we can buy a house. DH bought it 8 years ago, and i'm so glad he did. if he didn't have the condo, we'd probably never be home owners, or we'd have to wait a very long time.

EEKS yea we got lucky with that apartment that is why even if i get preggers we at least have a spare bedroom for the kid so it's not like horrible thing not having a house. I honestly don't know how people afford it.
