St. Patty's party tonight. Need suggestions!

So, DH informed me that we're hosting a St. Patty's Day party this evening. We were supposed to do it tomorrow night, but turns out we have another party to go to (sort of mandatory for DH) so HE decided to change it for tonight.

I'm excited (bought a green shirt at Steve and Barrys and a light-up head band) but sort of clueless about snacks to serve. We get the munchies big time when we drink, so we need food...but being that its a Friday during Lent, we cant have meat. Any ideas of some cute (possibly GREEN or IRISH) snacks to put out that will go over well with a drinking crowd (and wont take forever to make)???

dont ake yourself crazy stick with the basics... you also can make green cupcakes and use a little green food coloring in the frosting. maybe a veg. platter with all green veggies, brocolli, asparagus, celery, cucumbers etc....

either way have fun, and don't worry no one is expecting St. pat's day themed food, just good food and a fun time

Hum, I have an idea ..... POTATOES!!!

How about all different kinds of potatoes! You could do French fries (just be sure to call them 'chips') with salt and vinegar on the side for those that want to be authentic, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, or even kanishes too!

Also, what about fried fish and chips served in newspaper? That might be kind of cute and authentic and okay for lent! I am not a big fried fish eater (and the house might get a little smelly) but my DH loves that stuff!

have fun tonight

I like the idea of the vegetable platter with all the green veggies. You could make green jello shots. Maybe some brownies, cupcakes or cookies frosted with green frosting. Some tortilla chips with guacamole. You can make a onion dip and add food coloring to it and serve with chips. Maybe have some rye bread and some corned beef from the deli for those that can eat meat tonight.

Here is a recipe I found for Beer Dip when I was looking up St. Patrick's Day appetizers. It sounds pretty good.

INGREDIENTS
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
10 dashes hot pepper sauce
1/4 cup beer

DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt cream cheese. Stir in paprika; mixture should be pink. Stir in hot sauce and beer. Serve warm or cold.

How about the cucumbers on the little squares of Party rye bread. I think you just spread a good ranch dip on top of the bread and place a slice of cucumber on top of that and then sprinkle with a little dill weed. Pretty easy to make.

Spinach dip in a bread bowl.

TGIF has a frozen one at the supermarket.
Defrost and go.
Or you can make it from scratch using Knorr's vegetable soup mix.

As a first generation Irish American, I have to laugh at some of these suggestions! People in Ireland die laughing when they see what people do here for St. Patrick's Day!

But in the AMERICAN spirit of the holiday, I will suggest things that are naturally green:
Green veggies
Spinach dip
and I suppose you could dye things green too like frosting,

In the true IRISH spirit of the holiday, I will suggest:
fish and chips
sodabread

or to make it really easy, why not do an evening tea? bsicuits, cookies, mini-sandwiches (since it's Lent you could do tuna, egg salad and/or cheese

Beverages: tea, (black not the herbal kinds), beer (Harp, Smithwick's, Killarney) and Guiness of course. You could also make Irish coffees... Really easy: a shot of whiskey, plus about 8 oz. of coffee, and whip up some heavy cream and put on top. VOILA!

HAVE FUN!

trust me... you don't want sodabread from a bakery or a supermarket... disgusting in my opinion. granted, i have an Irish mother that makes it at least a few times a month! i love it... i can share a recipe with you if you'd like!

hope the party was fun....
