admitedly this may be a silly post.... but im a lil worried now. to preface this: im obsessed with cream of wheat!!! i eat it every single morning for breakfast, never get tired of it, and always use 2 splendas. i can't tell you how long ive done this for. clearly when i like something alot i get in an obsessive routine. for some reason, i prefer the taste of splenda over sugar big time. i never read any study that said anything that would scare me about it or anything. now my mom was listening to the 'skinny ***** in the kitch' book on cd and told me something about how it says there was this whole thing that was kept on the DL when splenda was trying to get FDA approved and she thinks i shouldnt use it any more.
... i just read on truthaboutsplenda.com that it has chlorine in it and up to 27% of splenda is absorbed by the body. yum i ingest chlorine every day. anyone know more about this? am i the only one obsessed with a sugar substitute? lol
Theyre not sure what the long term consumption can do bc there hasn't been any long term studies, but im thinkin maybe i shouldn't be the lab rat. not to mention, im only analyzing splenda when prob most of what i eat is processed and toxic. the more and more i hear, it sounds like going fully organic and/or fully vegetarian is the best option. just doesn't seem practical tho. anyone else doing either?

Re: sugar substitutes
Here is the thing with Splenda, it hasn't been out for very long and we haven't had that much time to test its effects etc. Years ago, when Sweet and Low and Equal came out every one said they are fine, now we know that they can cause birht defects and carcinogens to accumulate in our bodies.
You are not suppose to consume any sugar substitures when you are pregnant because of risk of fetal birth defects. With this being said, why would you want to ever consume it.
I think the best option is to go with something natural and not geneticaly or melecularly modified.
If you don't want to use real cane sugar, have you ever tried Stevia? It is a natural sugar substitute. The cool thing about Stevia is that it is actually recomended to diabetics and people with blood sugar problems to take because it helps to maintain blood sugar levels and avoid sudden increases and decreases.
I know trader Joes and Whole Foods carries it and some grocery stores carry it.

Re: sugar substitutes
think im hooked on the taste (esp w/ my cream of wheat lol i know sounds ridiculous!), and hadn't read anything negative really, that i wasn't worrying about it being harmful. but at this pt, id rather be safe than sorry.

Re: sugar substitutes
all i know is that its not good for you and regular sugar is actually better. Also i know some ppl use it for diet purposes but the truth is that you are better off using the regular stuff than any substitutes and not just with sugar but anything. Your body doesnt know how to process this and break it down, its foreign to your body. For generations people used the natural stuff so our bodies know how to break down these things but substitutes it wont.
I have a book at home that explains all this, i can look it up for you and i think it tells you why splenda is bad

me too but I don't care I know that sounds awful but i do everything in moderation . I figure at this point I can't go around being scared of everything - everything is bad for you if you read into it all. We are all going to die of something I don't overdo anything - so if your scared just cut back a bit

Yes I heard negative things about splenda as well and I still use it from time to time when I can not get all natural substitutes too. Stevia is pretty good and also Raw Sugar (they are in brown packets). As of yet I haven't heard anything negative about these products being that they are natural and if I am not mistaken Raw Sugar is not bleached or processed and is from the cane.

ironically i use it for taste!! not to diet. most ppl hate the taste so i know that sounds weird, but i can def get myself into another natural alternative since like i said, better safe than sorry. even if there isn't really conclusive evidence either way on it.

I use it for taste also. Just like diet soda. I hardly drink it but when I do it must be diet. I can't stand the regular taste of soda I'm weird.

Try Stevia then. If you changed to a sugar subsitute because of a family history of diabetes then Stevia will be perfect for you. Stevia is actually an herb that is sweet and works with the pancreas to help stablize blood sugar levels. It is recomended by many nutritionist for diabetics adn people with hyper and hypo glycemia!

Also agave syrup is good for sweetening. It's good because it dissolves well. I'm all for real.

Re: sugar substitutes
i'm not a fan of anything substitute...that is unless it's soy or something. The bottom line is, 'substitutes' are just that...a substitute - something fake, to put in place of something real. the whole idea bothers me! Luckily i hate splenda..can't stand it! BUT my mother had an obsession with it..that is unless she read that 1) it had chlorine in it, and 2) long term; splenda can apparently lead to short term memory loss(which boggles my mind but it's been the running joke in my family being that my mother can not remember ANYTHING! lol)
NOW, i will say that EVERYTHING we read these days says we're getting cancer from something, or this is gonna effect us, blah blah blah - and people think it's bogus because well...EVERYTHING we read these days says it...BUT - i also think that it's because almost everything thats out there today IS processed..which is exactly why i TRY to go for natural or atleast 'more' natural(if there is such a thing) lol. They even say that the reason why girls develope so young these days is because of all the hormones that are injected into meat..that's horrible & i believe it! anyways, i wouldn't freak urself out too much, but it can't help to stay away from things with a bad rep.

Re: sugar substitutes
Sugar substitutes are not good for you, however they are *not* as deadly as everyone assumes they are. My best friend is a epidemiologist and does a lot of research at her lab on cancer. It takes an abnormal amount of sugar substitutes to be deadly. She herself uses Sweet & Low!! That is supposed to be the safest- surprisingly...
I would try and use regular sugar in smaller amounts, but don't worry- you arent going to die or have children with 13 arms!

Re: sugar substitutes
have you tried sugar in the raw? I used to put 3 splendas in my coffee. but heard how bad it was for you, and decided to start using sugar in the raw. its all natural and better for you. it tastes good too!
