whistling in the house calls the devil, thats why you arent supposed to do it

also, you arent supposed to call someone's name if you arent sure if they are there bc if a ghost answers - it is like you are inviting him to stay. . . CREEPY! this isnt a superstition really i saw it on one of those paranormal shows.

interesting, never heard this one...

so whistling outside the house is ok?

the one about calling someone's name, can you explain that one? what do you mean by 'if you're not sure they're there'? like you can't call out someone's name in the house if you're not sure they're home? or am i way off lol

you can not receive a gift of knives- means the relationship will be severed- so my mom saw that I registered for knives, bought them for me & made me give her a $1 so I was buying them

eta- future farell- your avatar looks yummy!

OMG... we did that at my shower...only i had to give whoever gave me the knives a penny!!!

I also was not allowed to open any presents with knives, sissors or anything else... and even when my bridal party was helping me they too were not allowed to use anything sharp.

I also have superstitions:
1. No shoes on the table...like when you buy new shoes and you put them down i flip out if you even put the box the shoes are in on the table
2. no opening umbrellas in the house
3. do not smile or laugh when a hurtz drives by
4. when ever i talk about something bad, i have to knock on wood!

my family does that too at showers, you have to trade a penny for knives, and can't cut any ribbons when unwrapping the gifts

OMG, I never heard about the whistling in the house one!

I didn't realize about the knives either. We put a set on our registry and I got them at my shower. So is it a penny or a dollar you should give them then?

Re: superstitions?

Most of these have been instilled by me from my Nana and Grammam (Great Grandmother).

1. Don't open umbrellas in the house.
2. No shoes on the table.
3. If salt is dropped/spilled - throw it over your LEFT shoulder.
4. Don't whistle in the house - according to my Grammam it would make the angels cry.

My Pap only had one and that was to not conduct any business transactions on a Sunday. He would never buy a car or sell anything on a Sunday - more biblical than superstition on that I believe.

- dont put your purse on the floor or you will loose money

THAT IS SOOOO FUNNY... i never ever put my purse on the floor and DH knows that so he will joke with me and dangle my purse right above the floor...LoL

It stinks b/c sometimes i will leave my purse on my lap if i have no where else to put it just so it will not rest on the floor!

If I'm out and I have no where to put it, I balance it on my feet. My sisters think I'm weird!

-We knock on wood alot in my house (when there is lack of wood, we knock on our heads)
-No shoes on the table
-I don't open umbrellas in the house (my mother always did because she would dry them in the bathtub)
-I never walk under a ladder
-My grandmother would turn the other way if a black cat was about to 'cross' her path. (She eventually got over that--we had a black cat for 17 years!)
-if salt falls we throw it over our shoulder
-if a fork or spoon falls we say that company is coming (it usually happens too!)

Yeah basically. let's say you get home and you THINK DH is home. . .and you call out his name - if he ISN'T home, a spirit could take your calling out as 'answering' him and take that as an invitation to stay.

I saw it on this show where they would tape record the haunted house and when they played back the tape you heard the ghost talking and then the woman called out something and the ghost 'answered' and they said that it was a totally new spirit and was now welcome to stay in the house!!!

Most of the same have been instilled in me. I've never been big on the black cat thing. Although, I don't remember about the salt falling either though. That's probably going to stick in my head now. I remember about someone giving you salt when you're in a new home. I have to ask my mother again.

A friend that I used to work with stuck one in my head too...she used to say never to mark yourself. If you're talking about someone who got hurt, don't ever use your hands and indicate on yourself where. Like if something happened to someone's face, don't ever describe it showing where on your own face.

my mother believes in that too! also, you don't ever play with someone's crutches, cane, wheelchair etc if you're healthy and don't need it (she would catch us playing with that stuff when we were kids)

I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of now. I can make myself crazy if I think about them too much.

Not to open an umbrella in the house
No shoes on the table- even if they are in a box

And my Nana said you cannot give someone you love pearls as a present. It is bad luck or something. So any pearls my mom has she had to 'technically' buy them herself

and hence the reason I did not wear pearls on my wedding day because no one would let me borrow them from my family

I have never heard the shoes on the table thing, although I have never done that lol I don't know why you would put them on the table anyway

The purse thing I do. It actually just fell on the floor and I flipped out lol My MIL does this all the time, and I tell her not to do it b/c she will lose money, she never listens and i catch her doing it all the time, I just pick it up for her lol

Oh, I forgot the one about the pearls. I didn't know that one when I was younger and bought myself a pearl ring. I made sure I remembered that for the wedding though.
