superstitions?

superstitions?

My mothers , mother was an old school polish woman. She had alot of superstitions and things she followed. What are some things that your mother/grandmother or even yourself wont do b/c its considered bad luck.

1) When you move into a new place, you don't bring salt into the home. You have someone bring it for you lol I don't know why
2) don't whistle in the house
3) (This one is only something my grandmother herself believed in) Don't use yellow paint in the house, it brings bad luck. She painted the kitchen yellow one day, and her husband (my grandfather) came home and said he lost his job. So apparently she vowed to never use yellow in her house again since then. My mother used to believe it, and now I do to. I don't paint any rooms yellow lol

omggggggg.. indians have a ton of supersitions..

-don't leave your shoes flipped over when you take them off
-don't come back in twice to get something if you leave the house to go somewhere, if you do, then eat or drink something before you step out again
-rain before or during any event is a good omen
- when you enter someone's home for the first time, enter with your right foot
- never pass salt to someone.. move it closer, so they can pick it up

you can not receive a gift of knives- means the relationship will be severed- so my mom saw that I registered for knives, bought them for me & made me give her a $1 so I was buying them

OMG... we did that at my shower...only i had to give whoever gave me the knives a penny!!!

I also was not allowed to open any presents with knives, sissors or anything else... and even when my bridal party was helping me they too were not allowed to use anything sharp.

I also have superstitions:
1. No shoes on the table...like when you buy new shoes and you put them down i flip out if you even put the box the shoes are in on the table
2. no opening umbrellas in the house
3. do not smile or laugh when a hurtz drives by
4. when ever i talk about something bad, i have to knock on wood!

THAT IS SOOOO FUNNY... i never ever put my purse on the floor and DH knows that so he will joke with me and dangle my purse right above the floor...LoL

It stinks b/c sometimes i will leave my purse on my lap if i have no where else to put it just so it will not rest on the floor!

DH's Great grandmother had all these superstitions. You can't do anything new on a Friday. For example, can't pick up a new car, can't stay in your new home for the first time on a Friday. Well MIL was born on a Friday and DH's GGM refused to let MIL's father see her! Such ridiculousness!

wow, really? she wouldn't let him see her? that's pretty extreme lol

I always wonder if some of these superstitions are just personal preferences, or if they really go way back and where they come from.

Re: superstitions?

I am soooo far from superstitions. I don't believe any of them whatsoever. I'll open umbrellas in the house, specifically walk under ladders, I don't freak when a black cat passes me, & a broken mirror means nothing. I've done these and more all my life and after testing fate so many times, I am fully convinced that it's all in people's heads, cause my life has certainly been blessed

HOWEVER, when I was younger, I used to wonder if they were real. i remember that I used to NEVER step on cracks on the sidewalk. I always had to pay attention and step over them. lol. What a pain that was. I also would hold my breath while passing a cemetery. Sometimes me & DH still do that one.

Re: superstitions?

whistling in the house calls the devil, thats why you arent supposed to do it

also, you arent supposed to call someone's name if you arent sure if they are there bc if a ghost answers - it is like you are inviting him to stay. . . CREEPY! this isnt a superstition really i saw it on one of those paranormal shows.

Re: superstitions?

i only remember the thunderstorms. we used to have to turn off anything electric and unplug it, and stay away from the animals. my grandmother would always recite this thunder and lightning prayer in italian while holding me in her lap.... basically praying to the saint (ignatius, I believe) for it to go away. I was usually crying. we were traumatized by lightning because we would get really bad storms, and during one of them it struck and paralyzed my godfather.

there are more, but i blocked them out i guess. I'm not that superstitious. I'm still afraid of thunder and lightning though.
