Tacky or not??

Tacky or not??

okay--so i just got a voice mail from a friend of mine---since getting married--we don't see each other that much cause she's still kind of in the 'single' scene -- clubbing and stuff. (even though she has a 10 year old) -- and we're just not into that.

weeeeelll---she called to invite us over to a housewarming party she is throwing next sunday---at her new apartment. (she must have finally moved out of her baby's daddy house--they had been separated for the past year and she was just living there--but they weren't 'together')

in the voicemail she actually mentioned 'i registered at Target---soooo hope to see you there'

um---i always figured housewarming registries were usually for when you buy a house or condo -- but she's just renting? plus--isn't it a little odd to leave a voicemail msg and say you're registered? i dunno--just seemed weird to me

thats tough....only b/c she did live in someone elses house so she probably doesnt have much....but to leave a VM about it is a bit on the off side of things

Tacky. I think throwing a prty for yourself is great no one else is going to celebrate you so you might as well do it. Registering so people can bring gifts to said party TACKY!! I think anyone having any kind of party where they are the host and registering is tacky though.

Yeah this makes sense. I dont know how I would feel...its a back and forth thing. I dont know,I didnt register for my apartment when we first moved in together, we had a party but didnt askfor anything

Well, its def. tacky that she mentioned where she was registered at in her voicemail but I dont think its tacky to give her a house warming gift IF this is her first apt/house/condo yknow.

i probably will still bring a gift--just cause shes a nice girl and all. techincally she's been living in the same house with her baby's daddy for more than 10 years--and now just moved into another place.

this is why it seems so odd--its not like she hasn't had her own home already--shes just kind of starting over again and i guess she wants new stuff?? or maybe she left a lot of stuff behind?

This is def. a touch situation... She honestly shouldnt have said that she was registered anywhere on the voicemail...that is def. tacky. I think who ever wants to bring a gift is fine..but she shouldnt be upset if people dont bring anything.

That is so funny that I am going through the same thing with someone at work who just started the end of December but she knew someone in our dept already. I do not really know her and they decide to send an evite to everyone and then some to our dept (about 40 people) saying they are throwing a house warming to welcome her here and to her new apt. It was also put that she was registered at Target. Plus they only gave a week or so notice as for it is next Sat. She lived before in an apt a town away also.

I always thought too that it was just for houses because she is paying a apt complex to live there. A few other people from my dept thought it was not right and aren't going. I am not going either because I clearly don't know her that well to go and don't feel comfortable.

It is good to hear that I am not the only one who feels the same way.

VERY TACKY

Re: Tacky or not??

Awkward for her to have mentioned registering--makes her seem more interested in the gifts than the company. But, she may have been going through some hard times and wants a chance to start over.

I do usually bring something to a friend when I'm invited over, so I probably would bring something. Depends on how close to her you are.

Kind of obnoxious to mention where she is registered... BUT if you are going to a housewarming party, you should always bring a little something... so I wouldn't buy anything ridiculously expensive off the registry

It sounds really tacky to me, I think it's great she is having a party but to register for your own party is a bit much.

But if she didn't tell you, how would you know where she's registered

VERY TACKY

i agree. i didnt even know that people registered when they bought houses?? i thinks that's kinda tacky also. i thought housewarmings were for people to see the new place and have fun, and of course a small gift but not something off a registry

i can't believe people register for housewarming gifts?? I feel like people are just so darn greedy these days...whatever happened to just being happy that you have a new house...(or in this case place to live) and hoping your friends will perhaps be nice & get you something when they visit.

While reading your note, I thought she bought her own apartment but if she's just renting, there is no point of having a house-warming party. Just pretend you didn't hear the 'we registered at target' message. Bring her a good wine or something small.

I'm not understanding why it's tacky to register for a housewarming? I just went to a housewarming of a good friend and she was registered and I bought her a gift off her registry. I didn't see the big deal. For me, saved the guesswork of what to buy.

We all registered for our new 'homes' for our weddings and most of us are still renting!

This girl just moved out of her child's fathers house after 10 years. Sounds like she's starting a new chapter in her life w/ her daughter in a new place. I don't see anything wrong w/ it. The only thing I don't agree with is the VM.

I think it's very tacky! Not so much the registering, but definitely that she left you a voicemail mentioning it! That would annoy me.
