totally random discussion post b/c im bored...

i dont mean to bring the board down... but all this talk about the missing school teacher got me thinking... do you girls ever think about what you would do if say, you were being followed while driving alone at night... or if someone broke into your house/apt while you were alone??

i think about situations like that - just to give myself pep talk about a game plan haha

I think about it all the time. Especially when i'm walking to my car alone. I freak myself out LOL.

I know that I have a very loud scream but at that moment who knows what I would do.

I live in Queens and although I know that even in the best of neighborhoods crime can happen I still get freaked out. Before I got married when I would go out and come home late (4, 5 am) I would freak out becase there is never parking around my house. I would just change into sneakers when I left the lounge and literally run home from where I found parking. Some of the streets in my neighborhood are really dark so in the winter when I would have to walk from the train I would look everywhere to make sure no one was behind me.
DH says that I am super paranoid but I got mugged when I was a teenager so I rather be safe then sorry.

Id get a knife from the kitchen and make sure the SOB runs for his life! or Ill just run for mine..

and if I were being followed at night, Id call the police right away..

I hate being home alone, I know it sounds silly, but I hate it!

thats horrible!!!

i used to work in ALL areas of queens... mostly the bad areas - but let me tell you - that taught me to be SO aware of my surroundings!!

i highly reccomend reading 'the gift of fear' if you havent already - its a good book!

I carry mace and know my elbows and knees are my best weapons. I really want to take a self defense class!

That's one thing that I want to start doing, carrying mace.

Women stuck on the side of the road are sitting ducks for any freak to come along & attack....i remember hearing on America's Most Wanted that you are better off hiding away from your car until you can call for help from someone you know. I keep The Club in my car...not to keep it from getting stolen...but because it makes a great weapon if you hold the handle & swing.

I've also taken Tae Kwon Do for the last 6 years and learned a variety of moves and strikes that will hopefully disable an attacker. I highly recommend a martial art or self defense class to women...even just to learn weak points to attack! And learn to yell...loudly. We learn to yell with each attack...the yell alone will often surprise an attacker.

but i watched a tv show a few weeks ago about self defense and some other things . Anyway they if you are being attached or if something is happening to do NOT scream Help. They showed some studies saying that when people hear someone scream help, they hestiate to help and that more people will respond to you if you scream Fire

Yes, that is the best thing to do if you know where the closes one is. If you don't, then you should call 911 and tell them where you are, what road you're driving on and they will tell you what to do, most likely drive to the nearest crowded, public place if possible.

Someone tried to come into my house once while I was alone. My dog started barking and I think the person got spooked and ran off. But I grabbed a knife, hid in the basement and called the cops. It was scary. If I had actually been face to face with this person I probably would have passed out from fear

Not sure if everyone knows this, but if you feel unsafe in a neighborhood by driving you can take a red light. (Just make sure to observe the light as a stop sign).

And always LOCK your doors as soon as you get in the car!

I always check the car before I get in no matter where I am or what time it is. The Urban Legend of someone hiding in your backseat really got to me. I made it a habit and it makes me feel really safe.
I love that my car as soon as I turn it on and hit the gas my doors lock. No matter who I am with I do this as well.
I probably seem really paranoid but I am not-- I just like safety.

I've always wanted to take one also. We should look into taking one together since we live near eachother.. bayside/ little neck

I have a very loud scream & can bite to the point of drawing blood.

I think about this ALL the time... esp. someone breaking in while we're sleeping. This is why most of the things in my house double as a weapon (laugh, but I'm serious)... a really heavy lamp, a castiron pan... you get the gist.

I also have a game plan if someone was to break in... we live in an apt. in a house and we are downstairs. Our landlords sons room is just on the other side of our room and if god forbid someone broke in, I would just burrow thru the wall into his room (I'M SERIOUS!).

And we even keep an extra leash and collar in the bedroom for the dog just in case we need to make a break for it.

If someone were following me in their car, I'd just drive to the nearest police station.
