Original post by TommysWife08

i dont mean to bring the board down... but all this talk about the missing school teacher got me thinking... do you girls ever think about what you would do if say, you were being followed while driving alone at night... or if someone broke into your house/apt while you were alone??

i think about situations like that - just to give myself pep talk about a game plan haha

Someone tried to come into my house once while I was alone. My dog started barking and I think the person got spooked and ran off. But I grabbed a knife, hid in the basement and called the cops. It was scary. If I had actually been face to face with this person I probably would have passed out from fear

OMGGG thats so scray!!!

i always hype myself up when i get out of the car.. nothing like adreline just incase..

a guy tried to rob me when i was in college.. broad daylight.. about 2 PM - he was on a bike and he was trying to choke me and push me down to the floor with one hand and pull off my necklace with the other (i had a gold chain my parents gave me when I was 10) and i was not about to let that go.. I swear to God, bless the man who taught me Karate.. I don't know where I found the strength to kick him in his chest so hard that he fell back.. by then people started to run towards me and he rode off on his bike and i kept my necklace.. just after i started balling and shaking..

OMG I am so sorry you went through that. I am happy that everything turned out ok and you were able to defend yourself.

Yes - I think about this b/c so many break - in's in our area lately Not sure what that is all about.

Last wknd someone broke into our neighbors Van right in the driveway! It was in the middle of the night - they broke the window stole the GPS system and a bunch of dvds.

I can't believe I didn't hear it! The month before someone stole bicycles out of my other neighbors shed broke the lock and all.

I keep thinking what if they break into my house while I am inside how would I protect myself

scaryyyyy

LOL I love how everyone uses Queens as the 'bas neighborhood example' people from Queens usually use the Bronx. . .but anyway just thought it was funny.

That being said, I work in an area that is not the safest. I carry mace at all times and if I am wearing a jacket I will keep it in my hand in my pocket. I drive with the club right next to me so I can pull it out at any time. DH got my a blade but I work in a government building so I don't bring it with me to work

I try to be aware of my surroundings at all times and I try to walk with confidence

Yah agreed.I am not sure I would use areas anymore as an example at this point. It happens all over. I am in Suffolk - border e.northport/northport area. go figure.

no one is safe unless their community is in a bubble. People have to pass a FBI clearance to get into my buiding at work and i STILL dont feel safe!

I carry mace and know my elbows and knees are my best weapons. I really want to take a self defense class!

I've always wanted to take one also. We should look into taking one together since we live near eachother.. bayside/ little neck

I have a very loud scream & can bite to the point of drawing blood.

we should! I know they offer it at queensborough, interested? I can look into when the spring semester starts because the fall semester is halfway over.

I was being followed in a store once by a creppy guy....up and down the aisles....I freaked out.

Anyways...I am very aware of my surroundings and I noticed him creeping so I went to the manager of the store and asked him to escort me to my car which he did. Better to be safe than sorry!

funny as it sounds--but when i'm at home with DH and we're getting ready for bed...i always look at his nightstand where he keeps his gun....and he usually keeps it on the nightstand instead of inside of it since we don't have kids around.....and when i see it--i feel GREAT knowing that if someone tried to break into our apt. -- they'd catch quite a surprise from him.

when i'm alone--i keep the door locked and such. we have some pretty sharp knives. however i eventually want to get my DH an off-duty pistol to keep in the house for when he's not around...these days you just never know.

Re: totally random discussion post b/c im bored...

the only time i was followed was back in high school... our bus driver used to drop us off around the block from our house & i used to take the long way home through the woods to smoke a cigg & one afternoon, i saw this guy sitting in his car right by the entrance of the woods & something told me not to take the long way that day

well thank god i didnt b/c as soon as i started walking towards my house, he started to follow me reallll slowly... i freaked out and walked into the backyard of a house 3 houses down from me lol

also, one time about 4 years ago, DH (then BF) dropped me off at home after going out & there was a car sitting with their lights on in front of my house at about 2am... i refused to get out of the car until they left... which was about 10 minutes later

so i went inside & DH pulled away... about 5 minutes passes & the car comes back and shines a flashlight in the 1st floor window.... then they parked down the block and started to look in ppls windows

LASTLY - last year when we lived in the basement apt, we heard our landlords freaking out upstairs at like 330amso we go outside & there was a completely strung out 30 something year old woman sleeping on the couch in their florida room THAT was the scariest thing EVER b/c she had access to OUR apt & our landlords house!!!

i think those are the only scary things that have happened to me!

I was attacked and I screamed HELP HELP ME because I thought that was what I was supposed to do to scare the guy away. Well, this was in Manhattan and NOT ONE person came to my rescue even thought it was late at night you cannot tell me noone was around. I was attacked twice from behind and once at gunpoint. Both times it was because I was too trusting and not paying attention to my surroundings. I think that is the best way to keep yourself from getting in those situtations.

omg, that is so scary. I sometimes zone out when I am walking alone because I use it as time to think which is not good to do at all.

I always pay close attention to my surroundings. I was mugged before on the train so I also pay close attention to those on the train. ANd this happened at around 6pm at the 57th street station with lots of people on the train. I chased the guy and got my chain back but not one person even tried to help me. It was such a weird situation and i ran off the train to go after the guy, he saw me and ran back on the train i guess hoping the train would leave, but it was 57th street luckily and the train usually stays there a few mins waiting for the train across the platform to arrive so thats where i got lucky.

I was followed one time, and it was an area where there was a deli on the corner and people around but about 3 blocks over it became very dark, residential and NOBODY around. Once I realized this, i had to stop right where i was bc i knew if i went one block further that it would be a bad scenario. I saw a payphone and thought it was a good excuse to stop, especially since the guy had started walking extremely fast to catch up to me, i called someone quick to stay on the phone with me and know in case something happened. I screamed very loudly at the guy 'why the F*CK are you following me, which scared him a little since there were 2 people on the previous block. I looked over to the other side of me and his friend was on the next corner in a car waiting. The fact that I yelled so loud did scare him a bit, and I went back towards where there were other people. The crazy thing is that this was a local person, and the 2 people on the other block was a younger brother of someone i knew, he told my ex what happened, and when my ex and his friends saw this man, which was in his late 30's so i think they just knew him from around, he was some drug addict i think. But my ex went after him.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR LADIES THAT ARE AFRAID READ THIS PART: on oprah she has had this cop who deals with this on her show two times, he has even written a book about what to do in these situations. Ever since i have seen the show i have taken his advice and remember to do this at all times. One story he talks about and makes sense is about a woman that was attacked and what her mistake was. The number one thing he says is to show no fear, do not make any apologies which is a problem women have. If a man is asking to help you or anything, the ONLY thing you say is NO and thats it, once you start making excuses then the attacker says thats my victim. The example he gave to explain this was that a woman was walking into her building apartment with groceries, the man offered to help her with her groceries into the building and at first she said no but she said oh its ok you really dont have, and was feeling bad that she was at first showing this man that she might be suspicious of him but she didnt want to show him this so she was very apologetic, but since she was timid and apologetic he insisted and she gave in. He walked with her to her door and then again said he'll just put the bags on her counter, and again when she said oh thank you but you really dont have to, he insisted. Once he got in he did attack her, raped her for hours, and then she got lucky that he went to the kitchen, she got up immediately and just ran out of the house, that night though another woman was raped and killed by this man so she was very lucky bc if she didnt run out of the house she would've been dead.

The officer said that the problem is women feel bad to suspect a man of maybe doing something and dont want to insult the man. But attackers specifically look for these type of women bc they feel its easy for them to manipulate them and finally get to them. If you scream out NO from the beginning and show no fear most will go on looking for the next women to attack who will not do that. Also when walking down the street show no fear. They say if somebody is walking by you and you're alone and might be afraid, dont show it. I make sure to do this, and i will walk by the person like i am not afraid even if i am, they say dont look down, so i also make eye contact and dont move away just walk right by them. And whenever anybody does ask me if i need help with anything I firmly say NO and thats it, dont make any apologies for it. You can look on oprahs site to find out the name of the book, they give alot of great advice. So sorry i cant remember the name right now
