i dont mean to bring the board down... but all this talk about the missing school teacher got me thinking... do you girls ever think about what you would do if say, you were being followed while driving alone at night... or if someone broke into your house/apt while you were alone??
i think about situations like that - just to give myself pep talk about a game plan haha

Someone tried to come into my house once while I was alone. My dog started barking and I think the person got spooked and ran off. But I grabbed a knife, hid in the basement and called the cops. It was scary. If I had actually been face to face with this person I probably would have passed out from fear
What! OMG! How did they get in?
This is my worst fear

I was attacked and I screamed HELP HELP ME because I thought that was what I was supposed to do to scare the guy away. Well, this was in Manhattan and NOT ONE person came to my rescue even thought it was late at night you cannot tell me noone was around. I was attacked twice from behind and once at gunpoint. Both times it was because I was too trusting and not paying attention to my surroundings. I think that is the best way to keep yourself from getting in those situtations.
OMG were you ok...did they mug you?

Re: totally random discussion post b/c im bored...
I have a fear of peeping toms and/or people breaking in.
When I was in high school I was babysitting and the little boy thought his mom was home and was talking to the window saying hi mom. I ran in his room because he kept saying mommy's home, i see mommy....and I knew this couldnt be. What did I see an eye staring through the blinds. Just an eye, I couldnt see his face because of how the blinds were positioned. I have never been so freaked in my life...I grabbed the boy and ran in the living room and called me dad to come (2 blocks away). He got there in seconds and the person was gone and we called the parents who called the cops and they searched the neighborhood but nothing.
So yeah I hate this peeping tos. Also recently while DH was travling there was a peeping tom in the townhomes right next to ours. GREAT! I walked out at 9pm to go to the gym and there were 3 cops and a million people out front! Not settling, not settling at all. I hate staying home alone.
I just remembered another story. My sister used to work retail (Tanger Outlets) and would close the store every night with the manager - one night they were mugged when leaving. The attackers went after the manager first and my sister booked it. She is very athletic and prob could have outrun these idiots but she was so scared and nervous that she tripped and fell. They made her turn on her stomach and and keep her head down, took her bag and ran off (along with the managers bag and cash deposit). Very scary but luckily they were ok. I am sad this happened to her, she was 20 at the time and it was very detrimental. I guess it doesnt matter about your age but she is very fragile.

The officer said that the problem is women feel bad to suspect a man of maybe doing something and dont want to insult the man. But attackers specifically look for these type of women bc they feel its easy for them to manipulate them and finally get to them. If you scream out NO from the beginning and show no fear most will go on looking for the next women to attack who will not do that. Also when walking down the street show no fear. They say if somebody is walking by you and you're alone and might be afraid, dont show it. I make sure to do this, and i will walk by the person like i am not afraid even if i am, they say dont look down, so i also make eye contact and dont move away just walk right by them. And whenever anybody does ask me if i need help with anything I firmly say NO and thats it, dont make any apologies for it. You can look on oprahs site to find out the name of the book, they give alot of great advice. So sorry i cant remember the name right now
Good advice Denise and that was scary what happened to you...
I have also read:
When you are alone, walk with your head high Look everyone in the eye that walks by you (attackers dont want their victims to see them because then they can be identified) Yell 'NO' when they ask you to help Yell 'Why are you following me' if you are being followed Dont talk on your phone, they look for people who are distracted and not paying attendtion Hmm there are more things but cant remember now

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR LADIES THAT ARE AFRAID READ THIS PART: on oprah she has had this cop who deals with this on her show two times, he has even written a book about what to do in these situations. Ever since i have seen the show i have taken his advice and remember to do this at all times. One story he talks about and makes sense is about a woman that was attacked and what her mistake was. The number one thing he says is to show no fear, do not make any apologies which is a problem women have. If a man is asking to help you or anything, the ONLY thing you say is NO and thats it, once you start making excuses then the attacker says thats my victim. The example he gave to explain this was that a woman was walking into her building apartment with groceries, the man offered to help her with her groceries into the building and at first she said no but she said oh its ok you really dont have, and was feeling bad that she was at first showing this man that she might be suspicious of him but she didnt want to show him this so she was very apologetic, but since she was timid and apologetic he insisted and she gave in. He walked with her to her door and then again said he'll just put the bags on her counter, and again when she said oh thank you but you really dont have to, he insisted. Once he got in he did attack her, raped her for hours, and then she got lucky that he went to the kitchen, she got up immediately and just ran out of the house, that night though another woman was raped and killed by this man so she was very lucky bc if she didnt run out of the house she would've been dead.

that story is in the book 'The Gift of Fear'!! every woman should really read that book - it talks about how to trust your instincts and what they tell you.... was the author of the book on the show or something?!

I keep my cell and my car keys next to the bed. If someone breaks in I can hit the panic button on my car. Hopefully that will scare him. Dh thinks I am crazy.

I carry knives. I also have knives in my car. And when DH isnt home with me, I sleep with a knife under my pillow. I guess I would stab someone if they tried to attack me. I used to carry mace and I actually used it once. I should get another one.

Re: totally random discussion post b/c im bored...
when I was housesitting for my Aunt I stayed overnight at their home alone. they live all the way out East in like farmland. so their house is pretty secluded...i would have to run pretty far if someone broke in to get help
i was so terrified everynight i slept with a hammer under my pillow. (funny now looking back at it) my plan was to hide in the room and when the person came in bash in their brain with the hammer, or at least their eyes.
pretty gruesome.

YES!!!! thats the name of the book, thank you bc i couldn't remember it. Yes, he has been on the oprah show twice and spoke alot about trusting your instincts and how some women didnt. But one thing they showed on Oprah was SOOOO creepy and it was about your instincts. One woman who lived alone kept getting a strange feeling everytime she came home after work. She would swear she shut off certain lights and come home and they would be on, but she thought at first that she just forgot. Or she would leave things in a certain place and then they would be elsewhere. This kept happening and at first she ignored that gut feeling that something was wrong. Finally one day she decided to go with her gut feeling and find out what was going on. She put a hidden camera in her apartment and then that night she came home and watched it and was shocked at what she saw. This guy had been coming into her apt every single day, he would try on her lingerie and just sit around the house playing with her stuff and then would leave. They even showed the videotape of the guy doing this, it was so creepy
