unique manhattan receptions

my best friend (who lives in chicago & is moving back to NYC in may- yay!) just got engaged & is considering holding her wedding reception in manhattan (church is in the bronx). she does not want a traditional catering hall or hotel ballroom- she is looking for a unique space that is not outrageously expensive for about 125 guests (possibly a daytime reception).

do you ladies know of any places she can look into? i've been to penthouse 15 & its a great location, but i'm out of ideas other than that.

Re: unique manhattan receptions

I've never been to any but I've heard of Museum wedding receptions, art gallery receptions-I'm not sure how you'd find out more though.

Re: unique manhattan receptions

well, my friend just got married in July and she had her wedding ceremony and reception at St.John the Divine Cathedral on the upper west side. The grounds and church are geourgeous!!! She had to have the reception catered though, and rent linens, utensils, etc. But it was fairly inexpensive and turned out to be beautiful!

Re: unique manhattan receptions

What about St. Barts cathedral- and I think there is someplace in Columbia College. There is also a place in Madison Square Garden I forget what it is called but it looks really nice.

Re: unique manhattan receptions

The Manhattan Room which is above Rosie O'Grady's Restaurant (they own it I think). It is on 52nd and 7th I believe and across the Street from the Sheridan hotel. They hold the cocktail hour downstairs and the reception upstairs. Should accomodate 125 I believe.

Re: unique manhattan receptions

The Union Theological Seminary (part of Columbia University) has a beautiful space (English gothic style) which also includes a lovely courtyard during the warmer months. This location would be a good location as your friend's church is in the Bronx.

Here's a picture of the banquet room:

Re: unique manhattan receptions

The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park is beautiful. Do a google search. I've heard of people having weddings there, but I'm not sure of the details, if you have to ahve a member sponsor you, etc. I have been to arts events there though, it's gorgeous!

Re: unique manhattan receptions

How about Loft11...I think that's what it's called...I've seen pictures of it and it's gorgeous!!! But, I think you need to hire an outside caterer.

Good Luck to your friend!

Re: unique manhattan receptions

I loved tribecca rooftop - I would have been married there but wanted a nighttime wedding and could only afford a friday night - opted for a saturday night in long island instead. i think their website is www.tribec.com. I think it's unique and the food is amazing.
