I don't smoke it anymore but I think for people who use it for medicinal purposes it would be great for them

ps: i also agree that alcohol is very much understated these days. I know so many people who are anti-drug but all about gettin' trashed with their booze. I think it's fine to have a few drinks - but there are way to many crazies who dont know where to draw the line and bad things happen.

Re: What are your thoughts on the..........
oh it is unfortunately a gateway drug.... decades of NIDA research has confirmed that. doesn't mean alcohol isn't also.... I'm just not up on the alcohol research.
I agree it's not worse that alcohol... That doesn't mean we should open the door to another set of problems by legalizing it. That just means we'll have drunk husbands beating their wives AND tons of pot-related car accidents....
It definitely is a good anti-emetic... but that's about it. when you weigh the costs vs the benefits to society, it likely would be best for it to remain illegal, yet develop a good selective cannabinoid receptor agonist for patients with severe nausea problems. And that has been in the works for years. There are several compounds, including a couple purified THC sprays, either for sale in canada and the EU, or in development......

Re: What are your thoughts on the..........
Although as an attorney I know I would get Sh!t for this, but I actually feel that marijuana should be legalized...and here are my points
1. Alcohol is actually a far more dangerous substance than marijuana, not saying that either are great. Your judgment is far more impaired and you are far more likely to unintentionally harm someone drunk than high. Many smokers tend to understand the danger of driving while high and many report paranoia, so they tend to be more cautious, while alcohol tends to impair your judgment far more. Am I promoting smoking and driving? No. But it is probably safer than drinking and driving! Also, in court, the marijuana users tend to be there because someone wants them to stop or they are too lazy and just smoke (which does not speak for probably the majority of the marijuana smoking community who do it casually), unlike the drinkers who are in on neglect and abuses involving Domestic Violence and other harmful acts due to blackout from alcohol. I don't think we need to make these products illegal, but we need to educate people about them.
2. Tax Revenue. If you legalize it, the government can tax it. This will actually not only help in one, but two ways. First, revenue from marijuana users can be used to fund programs to educate children or anything else our country needs funding for. Second, when any underground market is legalized, crime goes down. Look at the Prohibition in the 1920's. People didn't stop drinking. Instead, they did it on the sly and the Mafia (remember Al Capone) capitalized on the illegal sale of alcohol. Making something illegal like this will promote gang violence, illegal drug trade, human trafficking, rape, prostitution, you name it. Also terrorism. Shocking but true. When it is legal and readily available, you stop this activity!
3. Also, when the government regulates a product, they can regulate its safety. Once again, lets go back to the Prohibition when people made gin in their bathtubs. Many people died this way because it was way too strong or it was poisonous. If the government regulated marijuana, they could definitely make sure it was safe.
4. Last point-the abuse by children, mostly teens. When I speak to my clients, I learned one of the best parts of marijuana is that it is 'illegal'...it makes it a game for them. Make it legal, take the fun out. And I don't want to hear about the gateway drug, because to me, that is what alcohol is. Personally, I think a family educating their children about what these products are and their affects are more helpful than trying to make it illegal and make it more fun. Look at children in Italy who grow up with alcohol. They don't have the problems with alcohol that we have here! My friends who went there in HS during a trip were laughed at by the Italian kids when they were drunk! Education and families actually getting back to a point where they talk to their children about issues will help more than banning it!

i dont mean this to sound like i'm flaming u AT ALL...so please dont take it this way...we're all entitled to our opinions so i'm just stating my opinion on ur opinion.... may sound harsh but i think most of ur reasoning is a little crazy..all u did in ur first reason was compare marijuana to alchohol...we all know that both are not good - just because one is worse, doesn't mean the other is okay & 'its not as big of a deal so lets make it legal'. That's like saying 'Well he murdered her brutally by beating her to death, but the other killer murdered with a quick gunshot...give the brutal killer the death penalty & the other some jail time.' NO. neither of these are justifiable. and as an add on - most people ARE educated about drugs and alcohol...maybe not young teens who are curious or just think it'll be a cool thing to try & never had parents to tell them otherwise - but most of us are all educated enough to know that neither is good for us...dont u remember 'DARE' in elementary school?? lol we're taught at a VERY early age...and it's usually engrained in us throughout all of our younger years with anti-drug compaigns or what have u...if we're smart enough to know whats good & bad, we can figure out how to separate the anti-drug ads, from the crap thats in movies & music talking about how normal & how great it is.
2) i get ur reasoning for number two..i really do. But honestly, our country & government is filthy rich & loaded with money....there are PLENTY of other ways to fund things - its just a matter of them reaching into their own pockets and doing so...stop paying athletes & celebrities MILLIONS of dollars and put it where it's supposed to be put...i'm not saying these people shouldn't be paid alot - believe me, i'm an actress myself - but when tv stars are getting paid a million dollars an EPISODE - and there are homeless starving people all over the country i think it's disgusting...and again i'm sorry but saying that making something illegal is going to promote gang violence and all those other terrible things u mentioned is an ignorant statement. Marijuana has been illegal for years.. YES, people will try to sneak things, but if when they're caught they get PROPER punishment - people will learn. Thats like saying 'Ok lets give the kindergarten class free reign...that will make them want to sit in their seats and listen because we're not telling them no.' While there are a few that would react in this way, the majority of this country would be in utter mayhem & there would be drugs everywhere...and i'm sorry but when i send my children to school one day i dont want them exposed to drugs on a daily basis because they're legal & people can walk around with it in their pockets. Also, i know u brought up the 20's...yea mobsters & other kinds of people capitilized & made money on illegal sales, but the world was a much better, safer, & happier place because there wasn't so much tolerated like there is today..and the only reason the world is so crazy & so filled with drugs, sex & alcohol is because there's been a gradual slide of things being more tolerant & 'not a big deal'. Its so sad to talk to my grandmother and hear her say ' I just dont get why people do all these things now...the world was never like this when i was growing up & raising children'. and she herself talks about how shes watched the world go down a downward spiral. just watch tv & movies now compared to how they were back then..so saying that making something legal like a drug is going to better the world is imo ignorant. If anything we're just adding to the gradual cycle...first it's marijuana next it's something else. it's scary to think what the world is gonna be like in 20 years from now..
3) Yea, the government can make sure it's safe...but thats still not going to keep all the morans who mess with it from messing with it. Maybe the marijuana that comes into our country will be cleared & safe, but there are still going to be illicit drug users who lace their marijuana with all kinds of crap once it gets here.
4) YES teens are known to rebel when their told not to do something, but i dont think legalizing pot is going to change that a bit. It just gives them more access to it. My mom always talked to me about drugs & alcohol from when i was a little kid and thats what never gave me the desire to touch the stuff. And while i did have strong morals, if it was all over the place & a million kids had it - it would've just made it harder to stay away from it. I watched my brothers drink & do drugs while I grew up, and the reason why I KNOW i never got into it? My parents kept me busy and i was never around it. Had i been around it I probably would've been doing it all just like 1/2 of my highschool was...make it legal, and u can gaurantee there will be even more kids walking around with it in their pockets.
bottom line: marijuana IS a drug whether we make light of it or not - whether it's less extreme then other drugs or not.. and there needs to be some sort of boudary with it. PEOPLE need boundaries as well.
lol okay - i'm done now. again - i hope i didn't offend u. I honestly just disagree with some of ur reasoning - doesn't change what i think of u as a person at all!

There are actually 2 other ways to get 'high' off of marijuana, one being eaten. N ot stright, but there are ways. When I had an uncle who was going thru chemo for lung cancer, we made him brownies, cookies and pasta. These things helped thru his process and after losing one lung and beating an inoperable brain tumor, he is now a very healthy man. I am for he legalazation, but know that if it happens, the Gov't will tax the heck ot of it and regulate it like they do cigarettes. I beleive alcohol is more harmful than 'weed' (if not smoked) If it were legalized, you would see a reduction in jail populations across the country. As far as a gateway drug, I don't beleive that it is. I think drinking is more harmful, to peopes bodies, and personal lives. I have never seen a person beat his wife cause he was high off of marijuana, or sleep with her BFF cause they had smoked. Just me but you asked and these are my thoughts. Flame away!

I actually disagree, no one is saying since alcohol is legal that pot should be too. But it IS OK to compare the 2 because alcohol is 'acceped' in out society. Legalazation doesn't make it something to abuse. Everything in moderation, there are people who can hold their alcohol and those who cannot. As far as people 'lacing' their drugs, the gov't lets Big Tobacco put poisons in cigarettes. The epople we vote into office, tells them it is OK to poison those who are silly enough to smoke them. This could lead me into a whole discussion about our Gov't, but I gotta go watch Lost and that is not the point. Rockerfeller Laws: never should have been imposed and still need to be changed. My opinion, but I believe strongly in it.

I do have to say...that its a waste of our tax dollars to send pot users to jail on simple cases. Who cares is what I put....Who cares about what other people do in there own private time. If they want to smoke a joint, roll it, bowl it, eat it, mix it with seasoning and put it on food...who cares....People who smoke are going to smoke anyway...whether its illegal or not!! The key is obviously NOT to get caught. If anything legalizing it..will have more of a possibility of lowering the crime rate in the streets, since people would be allowed to go to the nearest pharmacy or store to get it, it will also lessen the popular demand, it would be great for our economy and who cares!!!! Ciggs are bad, alchohol is bad and both are addicting......people are addicted. Im addicted to chocolate thats bad...and if they made chocolate illegal I would find a way to buy it!!! lol
The only thing that I would have to say that could be a downside....and a negative thing about legalizing...is marijuana could be a gateway drug to other worse drugs. But its still the right of the people to make this choice. Its a PLANT. God must of put it here for a reason lol

i know you may be joking or saying it lightly, but the last part just made me think...many things the Lord created can be/are misused and abused in the hands of man. certainly doesnt mean it was intended to be this way. also, there are so many temptations out there...doesnt mean they exist to be indulged in. thats a decision each person makes. i just dont think it should be encouraged by legalizing such a drug. jmo.

well first - Jess, to ur comment above - WELL SAID. The whole 'God put it here for something' is the oldest quote in the book & honestly i am so sick of hearing it...saying it jokingly, lightly or not. One of my brothers is a huge pot head & he says it all the time, and i love him to death, but it's such silly reasoning. the world has a crazy way of thinking which is exactly why it's the way it is today - everybody has their own rationalization for things. like jess said - there are many MANY things the Lord put on this earth that are misused & abused by man...u can say the same thing about human beings...i've heard child abusers say 'well God created children to be loved - and that's what i did'....PLEASE.it's just ones own thoughts being misconstrewed...if people want to see why God put things on this earth, they should pick up a bible - not smoke a plant they've come across & get a high off of it lol. ANYWAYS, i just went off on a tangent not targeted at you..just saying it in general...so..
i get what ur saying, but i guess imo if there was no alcohol, if there was no drugs, and if people had to pay real consequences for their actions - then there would be a lot less addiction in this world. MAN created alcohol in the form it's at, and MAN rolled up marijuana & smoked it....not God. also, saying 'it could be a gateway drug, but it's still the right of people to make their own choice' is pretty much saying there should be no laws & let people do as they choose...because how do u rationalize one thing as being okay and not the rest? where do u draw the line between 'well this drug is alright but not this one'?? I'm sure if marijuana was made legal and ur child became a huge pothead because he can walk to the store & buy it would greatly upset u... and yes, as parents u can guide ur children & hope that doesnt happen, but when access to it is that easy & everyone has it in their pockets it's not a far cry away from the truth. lol and i think comparing pot to chocolate isn't really a rational factor being that chocolate doesn't make u do anything stupid, effect ur motor-cooridantion system, brain cells, or give u lung cancer. jmo.

Re: What are your thoughts on the..........
I dont smoke pot...nor do I care if anyone else does. i choose not to.
Whether legal or not it makes no difference to me, I believe that if its legal people will still smoke it and those who dont b/c of the fact of being illegal may take it up and start smoking. Thats a choice each of us make...whether to do or not to do.
Whether its legal or not I dont think it makes a hill of beans into a hill of flowers.
Either way people who are potheads will still search it out and buy it and people who arent ignore it. I do however agree that if it was legal we would be paying for less 'criminals' to do time for it-I mean really do time for it.
How many criminals go to jail for their time and come out and say 'im never going to sell pot again?' Probably not that many. I had a friend who sold it, never had a real job, bought a house, a brand new car....lived the high life and guess what? He got caught did his one night and went home and sold it again and still had his house, his car and the diamond encrusted rolex. But in the end at 26 years his home and that is where he will be-b/c he moved onto other things that in the end killed him.
Yes Pot is a 'gateway' drug, people do it and want to know how they can feel doing something else...but I know plenty of pot heads who wont mess with anything else. I also know plenty of potheads who do dabble in other drugs-that is their thing not mine.
i really believe that no matter how much you teach a child you can only hope that they make the right decisions for themselves. I am by no means saying smoking pot is bad, Im saying getting involved in drugs to begin with. Some do and some try it and see its not their thing, some enjoy doing it-to each his own. i dont think smoking pot is as bad as drinking but then again Im sure some drinkers hold their liquor better then some pot smokers hold their high and vice versa.
Legal or not legal it will still be something that people are attracted to-just like drinking, driving too fast, LV purses, and brand new black boots....some better then others, some interested some not so much.
Im a smoker...do I wish I never started smoking-of course-newport LOVES me!!!
No one understands the harm you do to your body until you find out something is wrong. BUT I made the choice to start smoking-no one forced me-I DID! Just as people make the decision to smoke pot, skii or shoot up.
Its fair game as long as its in production and as long as people want it. And as long as someone says 'its cool' it will always be wanted by someone!!!

Re: What are your thoughts on the..........
Hopefully this wont upset anyone, but marijuana will be legalized in our country, it already is in California (but im not like a physhic or anything lol). I know plenty of students at my University that carry picture id cards to get their free marijuana baggies at clinics, they are students with medical conditions and had a doctor prescribe it for their treatment. They come to class completely stoned, and thats no lie!
If we follow this trend i predict that our entire country will legalize regulated marijuana/hemp for those who need it for medical purposes and to produce products such as linens, clothing, etc., from hemp.
Regardless of one’s view of marijuana use as normal or immoral, healthy or unhealthy, the fact is that over 70 years of government prohibition has done nothing to achieve the publics goals of increasing youth awareness of harm from marijuana use. While many losers do use marijuana, using marijuana does not create a loser out of someone

I was really trying to think of how I wanted to state my opinion on this but Peg you said it best. I voted could care less b/c whether it's legal or not people who want to smoke will smoke.....& it's their choice to make.
I do believe it's a gateway drug for some...not all. I personally know someone who just started out smoking pot and then turned into a cocaine user and let me tell you, it was not fun to go through that AT ALL. He was also an alcoholic to boot. He has now since been 2 years sober but for those who say it's not a gateway drug, I beg to differ. I think it depends on who is using it.
