What do you give as a wedding gift these days $$?

Original post by Elizabeth

I am curious...if you dont think it's too personal to answer....but what do you give when you go to a wedding these days? I got married 2 years ago and I know what we paid but I have no idea what people pay anymore at different places/differents nights. Do you always feel obligated to 'cover your plate' or would you not go instead? Try not to look at this completely from a bride's POV but also from the guest's view. We are invited to a wedding at Carlyle on the Green next month, a Friday night wedding. What if you dont know what it costs or if you do, what if what it costs is more than you can afford? We are now a one income family and I need to be more practical about what weddings we can attend (non-close friends/family) b/c of the cost. My SIL said she generally gives $300-350 per couple...Gee, I've been giving about $100 less...more if it's a close friend/family but I thought $200/250 was the norm. Help!

I do not give any less than $200.

We were giving $200 but now we have started to give $300 because we know how much everything costs. So basically it is between 200-300.

I agree that a friendship is NOT judged on the amount of the gift. I highly doubt anyone here means that at all. I never change the gift amount based on where the reception is held. If you have a backyard BBQ you will get the same amount as if you had a wedding at The Plaza hotel.

I also got few non-financial gifts at the wedding and was pretty happy about that. It was nice to get a few things that I normally would not buy myself (such as a $100+ covered cassorole dish) that I really like having.

Karen - I agree - Isn't it funny to see the regional differences?

We received a few actual gifts too from the wedding, and it was nice and a little different to actually have something to open. Of those few gifts, we really appreciated what they gave us.

I think the cash gift became popular around here since everything is SO expensive around here, it's literally what young couples need most (for the most part), aside from the typical gifts one receives at their bridal shower.
