What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice
Original post by Espo22
I was watching something so curious what others have to say.
What are trends you hate, or what tips do you have regarding clothes, hair or make up.
My biggest thing is that alot of people buy things simply because it looks good or is trendy at the moment and don't pay as much attention to the fact that maybe it's not the right look for them. When I go shopping the #1 thing i look for is how it fits me, don't care how gorgeous something is and don't care how much I want it or how trendy it is, if it doesnt flatter me then I won't buy it. So when going through the store I basically go through all the clothes and look for specific fits. I'll go through it and say nope wrong neckline won't fit me right, bad fit of jeans on me so nope, and so on. It drives DH nuts bc he will point out something he likes and although I'll love it, i say nope doesn't fit my body type. There are some things I would LOVE to wear but just don't. Some will just buy a trend just to buy it. I am very big on what bras make you look best, what style pants is best for your body type, if youre short what type of dresses and pants to wear and that sort of stuff. Thats why i love those 2 english ladies who do the 'what not to wear' England version. They are always on Oprah and this is what they focus on and tips they give.
One tip alot of stylists and make up artists give that I do agree with is DONT match your eye make up to your clothes. One time Jay manuel came to where I was working and the first thing he did was tell the girl i was working with 'oh no sweetie you never match your eye make up and clothes this way' she had a pink dress on and had on alot of pink eye shadow. I felt bad bc he said to her face it was tacky. But for example if you're wearing a blue dress, not into wearing blue eye make up to match it or green dress and all green make up. They say to find a color that compliments it but not to match it exactly and be dress all in one color.

Ok I have a few....
1 - I hate muffin tops also....and in general when chunky girls wear tight clothes and you see their rolls. Gross
2- I also hate when people where tight ankle skinny jeans when they shouldnt be.
3 - LASTLY - I have not been able to jump on this band wagon yet. I really dont like Coach, Dooney, Louis Bags or anything with C's or D's all over it. Everyone fricken has them and I cant understand why so many people spend hundreds of dollars to have a bag that A) is made out of vinyl and b) looks exactly like everyone elses bag and c) some people have good knock offs and it looks the real thing! If I am going to spend alot of $$ on a bag, I want one that is different and that no one has! Anyway - I am sure people have their reasons, just like I have my reasons to buy $250 pair of jeans but I just cant jump on the coach bag bandwagon!
LOL i actually dont like Coach, I know alot of ppl love them but I don't. However I am guilty of LV bags lol but they dont make vinyl.
Its so funny bc it is about everyone having their own reasons. I just cant get into buying very expensive jeans. Its weird bc i'll do it for other things but not jeans. I dont like spending $250 on jeans. One time I bought versace jeans and i have to say they were the best fitting jeans but in general dont buy expensive ones. I got lucky that I knew someone who had a boutique and I would get true religion, sergio valente and other brands like that for free but otherwise i wouldn't have paid for them lol.
Ok well I know not all their bags are made of leather though....all the ones I see people wearing are the canvas ones. $700 for a canvas bag? I dont think so! JMO! But for jeans....yes I love my jeans...but havent bought any in awhile. Been wearing old ones. I used to just buy buy buy whatever I wanted and charged it, but I changed my ways when I got married :)
yikes - i get the canvas ones because they are 'cheap' like less than $400
$700 better get me a leather one!!
but even the big leather totes I picked out for Christmas are under $500
Coach is the only brand that I can afford so I stick to it. Lately i have been hearing people say that they hate the logos so my next one I think is going to be a plain one - LOL

oh i get the leather ones. I remember what one person told me and that in a way it was an investment. LV bags last a very long time and don't go out of style. Not only that but its something you can sell at any time and get most of your money back. So if down the line you dont like it anymore or just dont use it anymore you can always sell it, which you cant say about most items we buy. Some things you can go into a store and get $20-40 for it but otherwise people wont pay good money for pants, shirts, coats, dresses that are worn and not in good condition. I remember this girl i knew, her mom had a bunch of old LV bags and fendi bags that she had for a while. When her daughter saw them she took them and started using them herself. Another girl i knew her mom had a very old gucci bag, i think 20 years or so. And same thing, one she saw her moms old gucci bag she started wearing it, so it was a bag that lasted over 20 years. Plus with some of them such as vintage LV and Gucci bags, you can sell them MANY years later bc alot become collecters items and people will pay a good amount for them.
So i stick with leather for that reason. I have one fendi bag that is their classic brown bag that is fabric and the inside ripped. Which S*CKS bc i cant really sell that one. Although i see some bags on ebay that sell at a decent price even when its not in perfect condition so who knows. But otherwise i just stick to leather

Yea i was always a fan of classic coach either stripe or plain. I have always been a leather girl IoI My mom said you can always buy a leather bag and it will last you years. I just never had money to buy anything other then a $30 bag but now I save up or ask for it as a gift.
For xmas I asked dh for a black leather Carly or Hobo that just has that lovely coach stamping in th e leather. Then the charms since they are cute or the darker patchwork bag.
BUT if i ever had a chance to buy Burberry I am going for the plaid with black leather trim. I just love plaid IoI

I hate Crocs too but I won't say it too loudly because I hated Uggs and now I have two pairs!
yeah i have to agree with the crocs, really don't like them sorry to anyone who has them.
Thats why I refuse to even try on uggs i dont want to see how comfy they are bc dont want to take the chance hahaha. Same happened with flip flops. I used to see girls with them all the time but even when going out to clubs and restaurants though, i HATED it. Yeah I decided to try it and now i LOVE flip flops
I know I am justifying. . . and I know I shouldnt BUT I wear my Uggs under my pants and DH gets me really different ones - not just the regular ones you always see so people are always asking me what they are. Not saying they are exactly 'pretty' but they are definitely different!
And, I can't even begin to describe how comfortable they are! Its like walking in a warm cloud!
ok you are justified tilde jk
i dont even want to know lol

Ah yes - my friend's grandfather just passed away and she got his only LV money bag that he used at the store he owned. Very old, vintage, very cool. I actually save alot of my old clothes for my kids one day. Not alot, just the expensive stuff and its in a trunk. I remember when bell bottoms and hippie clothes came back and my friend had all her moms vintage stuff...I was so jealous!

yeah i cant do that with clothes bc after a little bit of time I ruin most of my clothes unfortunately lol. So yeah i'll keep them for my kids to use if they want to or who knows years from now if i really need money I can always sell the bags. I would wait longer until i do this and its categorized as more of a vintage bag this way I can get more money for it. So in the end i can get my money back or even if i get half that would be good after years.
Oh and the great thing is with alot of big designers, they fix things for you for free if anything does go wrong. Some designers will even give you a new one if it gets ruined. Well manolo blahnik does this. If your shoes break somehow or something happens, you just get a brand new pair for free

i think i kind of stick to what i feel good in.. i have my own personal style i guess you could say..lol. I like hats..and quirky things sometimes... and ppl know it's my personality. I'm not too big on what's HOT right now. I really like the old classic styles from the 40s when people really knew how to dress up!! Me and My girls keep saying we wanna have a dinner party or holiday party where we can really do it up!!! But really to me it's not about what's in... it's about how i feel and my mood. Every now and then something comes in style or 'Back' in style that i fall for... but it's usually because i liked it to begin with..
on thing i could never really get into was the palazzo style shorts. i like palazzo style pants..but i could never get into the shorts..well the knee length ones anyways. but that's just a personal preference.
OOO I forgot about those hideous things. Unless you are tall and thin like a model, it does not look good on anyone
yup!!! i'm short and it does not look good. I dont mind the long pants so much... but the short ones... i can't take it..lol

I LOVE a 40's or 50's style look. The dresses were just the best then
i know... i was so inspired by the styles even when i was planning the wedding.. i just kept envisioning that 40s Hollywood glamour. Everyone really knew how to dress then!!!!!

i know, thats another reason I love it bc those type of dresses flatter my body more than alot of styles out now. I say back then they knew how to dress a real woman. The dresses are perfect and exactly what i need. The thicker strap, then how it cinches your waist but comes out by the waist so it accentuates your smallest part.

Im glad someone mentioned canvas coach bags - not a fan
Now Fendi is my style , over LV's , Gucci, Prada ect ! I have one that is 30 years old passed down to me , and 2 other newer ones. They are leather and will never go out of style , I love them.
I also agree with the 40's and 50's style dressing, Love that style !

i LOVE that site. I looked there for a rehearsal dinner dress..but i waited to long to order. the styles are much more flattering than the stuff today.. i think especially because back then you didnt have to be stick thin to be considered beautiful!!! Woman had hips and curves and the clothes were made to focus on that and feature it properly.

Yea i think fashion designers really need to get a clue that most women have a shape, we are not the twigs walking down the runway! I realize I have more of a shape then most but ******** it why hate on us for having boobs and hips? IoI
I am even talking about sizes you can be a size 4 but have hips/boobs and then your are forced to buy a size 6/8 and get it altered to fit on your waist. Why not design outfits that take in consideration of having the hips or the chest?

Re: What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice
I'm a huge fan of layers. I used to live in t-shirts and blazers. Then I packed on some pounds and outgrew my blazers (I had velvet, denim, corduroy, patchwork)... Gotta lose weight or buy some more.
I think everyone looks good in a fitted blazer. Shows the shape really well (better than a cardigan).
So my advice - if you're a cardigan wearer - switch it out with a blazer. You'll love it.
