What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

Original post by Espo22

I was watching something so curious what others have to say.

What are trends you hate, or what tips do you have regarding clothes, hair or make up.

My biggest thing is that alot of people buy things simply because it looks good or is trendy at the moment and don't pay as much attention to the fact that maybe it's not the right look for them. When I go shopping the #1 thing i look for is how it fits me, don't care how gorgeous something is and don't care how much I want it or how trendy it is, if it doesnt flatter me then I won't buy it. So when going through the store I basically go through all the clothes and look for specific fits. I'll go through it and say nope wrong neckline won't fit me right, bad fit of jeans on me so nope, and so on. It drives DH nuts bc he will point out something he likes and although I'll love it, i say nope doesn't fit my body type. There are some things I would LOVE to wear but just don't. Some will just buy a trend just to buy it. I am very big on what bras make you look best, what style pants is best for your body type, if youre short what type of dresses and pants to wear and that sort of stuff. Thats why i love those 2 english ladies who do the 'what not to wear' England version. They are always on Oprah and this is what they focus on and tips they give.

One tip alot of stylists and make up artists give that I do agree with is DONT match your eye make up to your clothes. One time Jay manuel came to where I was working and the first thing he did was tell the girl i was working with 'oh no sweetie you never match your eye make up and clothes this way' she had a pink dress on and had on alot of pink eye shadow. I felt bad bc he said to her face it was tacky. But for example if you're wearing a blue dress, not into wearing blue eye make up to match it or green dress and all green make up. They say to find a color that compliments it but not to match it exactly and be dress all in one color.

Best advice i could EVER give is to find a good tailor! Its not expensive to have items fixed so they fit you perfectly and look like they were made for you. And when you buy dress pants that have pockets, consider having them removed-- the pants fit soooo much better!
Another thing is to watch your hemlines on both skirts and pants. Some skirt lengths can make you look frumpy and if your pants aren't the right length for the shoes you're wearing, it can destroy a whole outfit.
Also, its soooo important to invest in good undergarments. The wrong bra or panty can make you look awful. Alot of women wear the wrong size bra so its a great idea to be fitted by a professional.

As far as makeup goes, my biggest pet peeve is when a girl wears the wrong color foundation and doesn't blend it in by her jawline and you can see a clear line where the makeup ends. I just want to say to her 'blend, damn it!!'

you sound just like stacy and clinton on what not to wear hahaha. They always talk about using a tailor and getting your clothes altered

Im totally wearing pants right now that I shouldnt be! LOL! I don't really care cus I just wear them for work- I'd never wear these out or on a weekend! It wouldnt look right! But they fit me in the waist but are a slightly baggy. Doesn't have that clean tailored look that they should!
I also just got jeans that totally have to be brought to the tailor cus they are about 8 inches too long!

BTW I just went to HnM and saw the new clothes from the Comme de Garcon line. I must say I was less than impresssed. For something they are saying was designed by an Avante garde desginer, I foudn the pieces to be boring and not interesting. I was totally bummed after all the hype it got!

Yea i think fashion designers really need to get a clue that most women have a shape, we are not the twigs walking down the runway! I realize I have more of a shape then most but ******** it why hate on us for having boobs and hips? IoI

I am even talking about sizes you can be a size 4 but have hips/boobs and then your are forced to buy a size 6/8 and get it altered to fit on your waist. Why not design outfits that take in consideration of having the hips or the chest?

I know this woman who is a deginer at a Viviene tam, and she was telling me how they have to design only for typical model bodies- can't make clothes for curvy woman. So annoying!!! Its like you have to buy the stuff and then get it remade to fit you!

I am into all black. That is just me. My students are so funny and have to let me know that when I have color on they say you dont have all black on wow! Even some of the teachers notice it and tell me. Its funny. What I hate is when adults (I am talking about the teachers I work with) dress like teenagers. I am a high school teacher and some of the teachers dress like the students. I mean you can be trendy but pick an adult trend not a teen one.

I'm a teacher and this is sooooooo true!!!

i think i kind of stick to what i feel good in.. i have my own personal style i guess you could say..lol. I like hats..and quirky things sometimes... and ppl know it's my personality. I'm not too big on what's HOT right now. I really like the old classic styles from the 40s when people really knew how to dress up!! Me and My girls keep saying we wanna have a dinner party or holiday party where we can really do it up!!! But really to me it's not about what's in... it's about how i feel and my mood. Every now and then something comes in style or 'Back' in style that i fall for... but it's usually because i liked it to begin with..

on thing i could never really get into was the palazzo style shorts.
i like palazzo style pants..but i could never get into the shorts..well the knee length ones anyways. but that's just a personal preference.

I LOVE a 40's or 50's style look. The dresses were just the best then

i know... i was so inspired by the styles even when i was planning the wedding.. i just kept envisioning that 40s Hollywood glamour. Everyone really knew how to dress then!!!!!

I keep telling DH that i am going to dress mostly like this. ALot of dresses i have are that style but want to do the whole look, i just have no patience but i am gonna try. Even DH always says 'that is exactly what you love' I also always look at those movies and think how amazing women looked then.

DH and I love the show Mad Men. And the first season - in the 50s - I LOVE the styles AND they would look so much better on me than styles today do!

i know, thats another reason I love it bc those type of dresses flatter my body more than alot of styles out now. I say back then they knew how to dress a real woman. The dresses are perfect and exactly what i need. The thicker strap, then how it cinches your waist but comes out by the waist so it accentuates your smallest part.

thats why i LOVE this site, such gorgeous dresses

http://www.poshgirlvintage.com/

i LOVE that site. I looked there for a rehearsal dinner dress..but i waited to long to order. the styles are much more flattering than the stuff today.. i think especially because back then you didnt have to be stick thin to be considered beautiful!!! Woman had hips and curves and the clothes were made to focus on that and feature it properly.

EXACTLY!!!!!! and i prefer curvy bodies, not everybody wants to be stick thin ya know. I also looked on there for a RD but same thing, you have to stay on top of it bc first you have to wait until they finally are ready to sell it and then do it quickly bc can sell out.
