What type of house do you normally gravitate to?

Original post by yelley77

Colonial, ranch, victorian, splanch, high ranch, etc?

I'm curious because I find myself always looking at the same style and wondered what some of you guys liked -- or if the style of house even mattered to you and DH?

My favorite type of house - small tudor or huge colonial. So different, I know.

When we were looking we looked at handyman special capes and ranches so we could expand.

Honestly, my DREAM house is the house from Home Alone!

I'm not sure of the style though

I know, I always LOVED that house! Or the house in Father of the Bride.

I love when they have high ceilings and a loft.

capes! love them! there is so much potential in them to expand and make them what you like

im not much of a fan of high ranches.. my parents built one and then when we moved we moved into another. I dont like walking up 12 steps to get into the house.. esp after grocery shopping.

colonials are nice but the bedrooms are always on the small side

I like colonials and victorians. And log cabins but not when there is too much log inside. Where we are looking (nh), there are lots of log cabings, and the ones with the log walls on the inside look like too much wood for me. I like regular walls inside, wood ceilings or beams, and log outside. But that's just me. What kind of log cabins do YOU like??? I have a woodsy preference, but not too rustic. Weathly rustic is GORGEOUS.

These are my fave log cabins...

Lake George

LOVE them!

i grew up in a log cabin that my father built......
it was awesome.....full logs and lots of wood

maybe try some made of 'D' logs that are flat on the inside and all interior walls are sheet rock...
thats what my mother has now.....and that is not too much wood....that is what i really love for a log cabin...

but i do have to say there not too many log cabins on long island
but i see you are thinking of moving

Yeah, I know, LI doesn't have the log cabin thing going on. But in NH they do, as well as victorians and colonials on 2 acres for $150K

i love victorians and colonials, but cannot afford them. there was a split that i LOVED, so we really liked that style too, but they tend to have small basements, which DH would never go for. DH likes ranches because of the large basement. what he didn't like were capes, yet that's what we're buying. it's rear dormered, so that's what made it OK for him.

I think capes are my least favorite because usually the ceilings in the bedroom are slanted and being that DH is 6'3 that doesn't work well for us. But when house hunting i always seem to click on capes because they are cute -- then when i see the slanted ceiling i get sad.

I totally agree with you. I like capes that are dormered. Not a huge fan of that slanted ceiling look..I always feel like I'm in someone's attic, yet some are done quite nicely. My cousins are slanted and I don't feel confined at all. Strange.

yeah, if the house wasn't dormered, we didn't even bother. our first open house that we went to was for a dormered cape in plainview which i fell in love with, and that's when DH realized that not all capes are completely slanted, so we added dormered capes to the list. i still really thought we'd end up with a ranch.

my sister just fully dormered her cape. it's AMAZING now. they got so much more room vs. the two small slanted bedrooms they had up there before.

colonial and tudors I looooove tudors!

I've always loved tudors too. I lived in one...cute but kind of small. Growing up, I used to love going through Forest Hills with my father and look at all the huge tudors! Those are the kind I can never afford, or like in Garden City!

we do this a few times a month. then dh will come home and look up one that is listed, and make me guess how much it's listed for. these are ATTACHED on both sides usually (the ones in the gardens are rarely obviously listed); last one I guessed $600k, it was listed for $899K

I love big tudors...in North Flushing (Queens) they have these huge gorgeous tudor homes that are to die for (and 2 million plus )

I also love a nice center hall colonial

I know which ones you mean. There were some right by the florist my uncle owned. And those are the attached. OMG, imagine how much the stand-alone tudors are...untouchable! :(
