Original post by Scoop

and when?

My husband took my parents out to dinner and asked them and then he popped the question 4 days later. I was completely surprised.

Not mine - and mom was PI$$ED!!!!!! But the poor guy didn't know if he should cause he thought you were just supposed to ask the father, and because my father passed away, he just didn't know.

I know he didn't ask my Father- why bother. I don't know if he officially asked my mother but she knew about the ring and saw it before I did!

**** On a side note once we were engaged we called his mother to tell her and then she went and called all of his sisters and told them that I must be preggo!! (said in most sarcastic voice) I LOVE MY MOTHER IN LAW*********

Chris did not. My mom can't keep a secret for anything and he knew that if he told her she would have hinted to me and I wouldn't have been surprised. So instead he asked me right in front of her and his whole family.

My husband took both my parents out to dinner one night when I was working and asked them both. Then he proposed 2 weeks later, at Rockafeller Center in front of the tree. I still can't believe that I didn't find out, that's a big secret to keep for 2WEEKS

DH asked both my dad and stepdad about a day or two before he asked me -

Mine asked my dad and told my step-dad. He wouldn't tell my mom though because she is a blabbermouth and would somehow of spilled the beans to me

DH did not ask either. He doesn't know my dad real well (parents are divorced and I don't see him that often).
I'm not really sure I go with the whole idea of asking the dad/parents. I guess back in the day it was the norm, b/c girls got married at like 16, but I'm an adult and fully capable of deciding whether or not I want to marry somebody! My DH didn't need anybody's permission in my mind. I'm not very traditional though.

My DH 'pretended' to be sick and stayed home from work but he was really picking up the ring and then went to my parents house to show them and ask for my hand. This is a real big deal to my Dad. He was very happy that Steve asked especially since my BIL didn't

HA!

We were dating three years before we got 'officially engaged' but he asked me parents a YEAR before we got engaged! A whole YEAR! He wanted my parents to know how much he loved me and what his intentions were (i.e. not just stringing me along lol) but my mom told me that he was just gushing with love for me poor little guy just loved me so much, he had to tell someone!

So it was basically wait for Olga to finish school before it became official

Edited to say: I know I'm not a newlywed - but this story always cracks me up!

Mine did too! He and I are both teachers and work in the same building. We were both at work setting up our classrooms and he snuck out to go ask my parents (I only lived across the street from the school). He did it 1 week before we got engaged. I'm surprised my mom kept the secret for that long! She has a big mouth!

I am with Amy on this one, I am not traditional about it, we lived together for 3 yeas, and my parents live abroad. After we got engaged we let them know (both set of parents) and they were so happy for us!

same as Mary

I know he told my mother beforehand, but I am not sure he technically 'asked for my hand.'

starhead...I am with you...I was glad that DH didn't 'ask for my hand' - my parents don't 'own' me

what we did do was took both of our families to dinner - since MIL was in town...so my parents had a clue...

I know my BIL asked for my sister...but my parents know that DH and BIL are different and don't think more or less of either

i am a peeker (please don't be mad i chipped in!) but fh asked my parents three weeks before he asked me - he took them aside at a bbq at his parent's house (taking them on a 'tour of the house' - i should have known!) - anyway, my parents knew it was coming so everytime i would see them, they would check out my had and then one day poof - there it was!
