Why Do You Want Kids?

Original post by trojo1521

In the past, I have always been the person that said they would never have kids; I would have 15 dogs before having a child.

But now I have been thinking about it more, especially with the pregnancies of friends of mine. I always knew the reasons why I didn't want to have kids, but now I can't seem to put into words why I might.

So I know it could be a personal question and difficult to answer, but any guidance is appreciated.

Re: Why Do You Want Kids?

I'm waiting at least a few more years to have kids, mostly because I feel we're both too immature right now, but eventually I do want to start a family.

This may be a superficial reason, but I've always thought it was cool to pass on your genes and see what the kid comes out like...is he/she going to look like me or him, or a combination, what personality traits will they pick up, etc. For me, it's a way to have a part of us living on after we've left this earth.

I used to be really intimidated by kids, but over the last few years I think being around them is fun, now that I have a neice, I get a kick out of seeing her start to walk and speak and all the cute, funny things she does. I'm looking forward to one day living those milestones with my own kids.

i have tons of reasons-i want to experience the complete dependence and unconditional love of the child and the responsibility of a human life, i want to see the first smile, be excited at the first coos, words, crawl, walk, all of the milestones, then i want to get the know the unique personality of our child. i want an excuse the play with toys and run in the playground again.....

i want to see their father in action and the extension in our love in each other in our child. i want to see their accomplishments and revel in them as partially my own and to be there for them in their failures as no one else was for me. i want to have grandchildren one day that i can spoil. i want someone to care about me when im old and dying...

that being said, i don't want children for at least 3 years, i still want to be selfish for a little while.

I am definitely not ready for kids right now, and neither is DH, but we want children because we both love children so much and have a very strong sense of family and values that we want to spread to another generation.

And as Colette so wisely said, if for nothing else, they do come in handy as channel changers!

Thanks ladies! I don't think I am ready yet, maybe in a couple of years. I still want to be able to pick up and travel and only have to worry about putting my dogs in the kennel.

I think the maternal clock just starts to tick and all my friends that have stated prior that they never want to have children are all beginning to change their minds too.

reasons to want a child or more
1. your kids will be the extension of the love that you and DH share
2. you can pass down your knowledge, wisdom, guidance to another generation
3. kids do the cutest things that completely melt your heart
4. its the natural course of life
5. I am personally very close to my parents and siblings and can't imagine not having one of my own with DH
6. having siblings means that your kids will never really be alone in the world, they can always depend on their siblings

I don't. I'm not sure that I ever will. I love dogs DH and I are on the same page... IF we decide to have children it won't be for at least another 10 years or so... we are just not ready and are not sure that we want them. I'm sure he would make a great father, and maybe I would make a great mother too! But as for right now- I am on the 'no kids' train.
