I have a wedding in October that I've known about for quite a long time but it's also my niece's first birthday that weekend and she lives in NC. I feel like I've missed so many things in her life and I really want to make it to her birthday but on the other hand I have known about this wedding much longer. It's not a very close friend but she did come to my wedding. I don't know if I should suc k it up and miss my niece's first birthday or very politely tell her the situation I'm in and then rsvp no when we get the invte. Obviously I would send the same gift if I went or not. I'm so torn! What would you do if you had to choose between family and friends?
And Joey, if you're reading this it's NOT your wedding!

Go to the wedding. The baby wont know the difference and she will understand :)
Dont kick yourself. Do whats right. But I think you should skip the B'day and go to the wedding.

I would go to the wedding. You can celebrate your niece's birthday another time and she's not going to remember if you're there or not. I'm sure your sister will totally understand.

I'd want to be around fam instead, but would def feel obligated to go to this wedding... bc it was scheduled first on the calendar and bc they came to yours... That would seem like the 'moral' thing to do... and i'd rationalize it by saying that your neice is going to have plenty of bdays in the future

Yeah this is exactly how I feel...I know I'm going to be sitting there wishing I was with my niece. I love my friend but still...
We are hopefully moving down to Charlotte before her next birthday so I guess that's the only thing that will keep me from being totally bummed out.

Yup and we'll definitely have our own GTGs!!!! I'm going down in two weekends to look at different builders. Do you own or rent? If you own in a new development I'm going to need every detail possible!

I would go to NC to your nieces b-day. I have been to plenty of weddings and then those people didn't come to mine for various reasons. I didn't think twice about them not coming, I wasn't offended, I realized that people have conflicts.
Yes your niece will have more bdays but their 1st is a special one.

Changed my mind. Someone has a good point. You're not close with the friend and who knows what will happen in like 5 years or something. Your niece is important to you. Go for your niece, send a gift and you'll see wedding pics on FB or something I'm sure.

No way. Go to your Niece's First Bday. If you are anything like me you will be so upset forever about missing it. Family is family. I love to be around my family. They are so fun & parties are always great with them. I would definitely explain to the bride about the situation. But i would not miss her first bday. I know, my niece & nephew are like everything. I dont miss anything for them. Im that crazy Aunt like my sis' kids are mine. lol

We rent right now but will be looking to buy in the next 6 months while we wait for our LO...
Around here most of the developments are from within the last 10 years but DH seems to want a home that's a little older -- or at least a home where we're not completely on top of our neighbors. There are also tons of new developments, too, and they're always building. It's pretty crazy!
We can definitely have our own GTGs!!!

Honestly, I would go to the birthday. It's family, you might not be friends with this girl in 5 years, and it's what you would prefer to do.

I'd go to my niece's 1st Bday, I'd be upset to miss it over a friends wedding, esp. if youre not that close anyway. I'd send them a wedding gift and let them know youre going to be out of town that weekend.

i think i would go to NC..based on the relationship you have with ur family & how much we can all tell you absolutely adore your niece, u wont have a good time at the wedding. It seems as though you would just be going to the wedding because its the 'right thing to do'. im sure your friend would understand!
ps - what are the house prices like down there? DH & I talked about moving to NC a few years ago, but then we decided we would want to stay here - buttt thats starting to sound like an impossible thing.

I would go to the wedding. Your niece isn't going to remember or be disappointed but your friend will, and since you've known about the date for a long time she'll probably feel really bad. You can always visit your niece the weekend before or after and have your sister schedule her party when you'll be around.
