YAYYYYYY!

It's OVER!

Let me explain. I was a post-doc trainee at brookhaven labs. While the scientists in the labs are amazing people (both nice and brilliant), some of the admin folk were major @-holes.

They misdeclared me on my taxes for 3 years as an independent contractor (which puts me in a scary tax bracket), when I should have been in a very low 'trainee' bracket. I tried to point this out, and they were very snippy to me and said 'just pay it, we're not going to help you gain a more 'favorable tax status' '

I refused to pay all that extra tax, and hired a very very good acct to do my taxes at the trainee level.

I waited several years for my IRS audit, and it finally came this fall After several months of severe stress (and tens of thousands of $ looming over me), they ruled against BNL and for me! YAY!!!!!!!

Those @-holes at BNL refused to even provide a document to the IRS confirming I was a trainee there. I had to provide my original contract to the IRS.

all those years waiting fot the audit, getting audited... all the lost sleep and stress.... It's OVER

Seriously, what's up with the federal govt? they give me a grant to train somewhere, and then another dept of the same gov't tries to screw me over and make me pay 40%+ in taxes

can't the 2 depts sort of communicate and work this out without giving poor permanent students agita? post-doc income is so low that if you pay 40%, you literally cannot live like a normal modest human!

I also cannot even describe how happy I was to receive my first W2 from my new job. W2's are soooo straight forward..... and my new job declares me properly!
