You know what I love??

Original post by dajc23

I love when I see people who are many years younger than me buying homes. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside

I don't enjoy being poor

oh and this post is NOT meant towards anyone on this board. Just something I saw on FB earlier and it got me angry

So, i had a friend whose husband's parents paid for their HUGE wedding. She was always one 'upping', his parents bought them a 600,000 condo in NYC.

Just found out... She's leaving him. Haven't even been married for a year.

So, even though my DH and I rent an apartment and will probably have to save more $$ to buy a home, at least we love each other and we're healthy That's what I keep reminding myself!

you bring up the best point! a little off topic, but a very good friend of mine lived w/ her ex BF. he bought a $1.1 million coop in soho, and she's the one did all the plans for renovating it. his friends were all super rich, living in soho and tribeca, so she wanted to really compete with them, and so she can do it all on her own, w/out hiring an interior designer. she did a great job, kept saying it was her place, even though they were having major problems. sure enough, they broke up, and she had to move out. now he lives there with his new GF, and she is bitter! she complains that there's another woman in 'her' kitchen, living in 'her' home. she laid out no $$ for the place, and even had the audacity to say that he would be stuck living in a place that she designed, if they ever broke up.

anyway, my whole point was that when she came to see our home, you could tell she wasn't impressed, and you know what, i really don't care. my DH and i are very happy, and she wasn't happy then, and she's not happy now w/ her new BF. we don't have a showcase home, one day our home will be nice, but it will never be a million dollar (heck, not even 1/2 million dollar) over the top home. it's simple, cute yard, and we're HAPPY there. no matter where DH and i live together we'll be happy. it's not about owning the house and showing it off. i know how very fortunate we are to be able to own a home, and it's definitely a sacrifice in lifestyle, but it's worth it.

we went into contract when DH was 38 and me 32. yes, it's hard seeing younger people 'accomplish' more, but the grass is always greener on the other side. you're still young, and i know you're happy w/ DH, and that's what matters most.

Dana, if you didn't waste all of your money on blow you'd be able to afford a house.

saving is so hard in NY especially if you didnt live with your parents- I was lucky- when I got engaged, I moved back in with my grandma for two years- she had just lost my gramps and needed the help anyway

but we never could have afforded the downpayment without that

we live in a small 2 bedroom coop- I watch a lot of HGTV and see 5 bedroom houses with walk in closets and 3 bathrooms for less than we paid here in NY- sux

house hunters - i love it, but i get so tired of seeing big brand new homes on huge lots for $200K. seriously, how is that possible? but i could never leave NY.

owning a home isn't all it's cracked up to be, we're house poor, that sucker drains the life out of us.

well I am 40 and dh is 45, we just built our home, we cashed in our cd's we had for yrs. plus our retirement, we love our home but we still got some debt, and we have to start saving again, and with this economy that seems impossible. having your dream home is not what it is cracked up to be. now we have NO money for fun...

I moved out when I was 25 so I could save for a house while living at home! Some people I just don't understand how they have so much money! But I always think..maybe its their parents that helped or paid for it!!!!!! we did it all on our own!! that always makes me feel better!

Some people had help or had ways that they were able to save. I lived on my own for a few years (while in college and grad school) and then moved back to NY. I was in the process of looking for an apartment and my parents told me to just stay home and save my money. DH and I both did this. We both paid our parents rent since we're working adults, but it was still A LOT less than what rent would be. Aside from rent, I paid household bills and did grocery shopping too so it's not like I was free loading at all. This gave us both the opportunity to sock away a lot of money over the years before we got engaged. Sometimes it just works out that way. But like Kristi said, we're house poor too.

Re: You know what I love??

Chances are someone either helped them out or these kids are just extremely frugal and just had a ton of loot in savings....

Don't feel bad. Just look at it this way, at least you don't have to pay a mortgage payment! I know homeowners who wish they don't have to pay 2 grand or more per month...

This is what our situation is...

We are living rent free in DH's parents' house. They wanted us to save money. Then, a year from now we are either buying their house or our own.

I was 43 when I got married and never owned a home. At the rate DH & I are going, it doesn't seem like we 'll own anytime soon. I don't know how some people can do it. everything is so expensive! you work so hard and it seems to never be enough. I am thankful though for all that I have. But I just want a little more LOL
