My maiden name was very common and very ethnic, and frankly, I was kind of happy to get rid of it. But at least people could pronounce it! Recently more and more people are butchering my new last name - and it's not even that difficult. Either that or they mistake it for my first name over email - I've been getting lots of messages saying Dear Lynn (which is close to my last name)
It's getting alittle frustrating!

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
i'm chinese so it's almost a given that it may just be hard to pronounce. my maiden name isn't so hard. most ppl were able to say it w/o any effort but with my new name.. sheesh! i get either 'nuh-guy' or they just spell it out - HAHAH! but it's pronounced NYE. big diff, huh? but in chinese it sounds bad-ish.. sounds like hardship. eh.. i guess you would have to be chinese to know what i'm talking about. =P

I like my madien name much better...that's why I never changed it..lol. Everyone pronounces it wrong and I am a teacher. I didn't want the kids to have a field day with it.

I doubled my last name! My maiden name used to be a very common word used in every day conversation and now my new last name is 10 letters! At least it is German just like me! (My last name was Irish)

I had a long Polish name which I loved, real converation starter on check out lines.... Now when people call for me either at work or home they butcher my new name which is short. It is a french last name but they make it very American. lol.

Mine sounds like 'foker' like meet the fockers. And I work in a high school... WHAT DO YOU THINK??? Big time curse!
ETA: but my maiden name was pronounced 'munch' (not spelled that way) So the kids had a field day with that too!!!
It is wierd bc my whole life everyone always called me 'munch'.. not my first name... just 'munch' and now I am Focker.... The abuse never ends.
Munch-Foker???

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
I loooove my new last name . It's Austrian (rare for a Jewish family) and so pretty. I actually wanted to be Austrian when I was little (well, more specifically, a member of the Von Trapp family ) so it's kind of funny that I wound up marrying someone with an Austrian last name (esp since that's only about 1/8th of his makeup). It's still weird for me to hear though, even almost 6 months later.
But my maiden name was the biggest PITA. I had an apostrophe and was forever being told by websites and computer systems that I must enter a valid last name . It was also impossible when it came to alphabetizing it. So, I was very happy to change it. I also have three older brothers, two of whom have sons so it wasn't a worry about passing the name on.
