My maiden name was very common and very ethnic, and frankly, I was kind of happy to get rid of it. But at least people could pronounce it! Recently more and more people are butchering my new last name - and it's not even that difficult. Either that or they mistake it for my first name over email - I've been getting lots of messages saying Dear Lynn (which is close to my last name)
It's getting alittle frustrating!

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
People have never been able to pronouce my last name. DH's is MUCH shorter and easier, but for some reason I decided to hyphenate!!! I honestly am not sure why I did it. I guess it was the me being the last of my kind thing. So, instead of having one name I now have 3. My professional name is still my maiden name. My SS card and IDs say my married hyphenated name. People that meet me through my DH know me as Heidi DH's last name. Its almost like I am 3 different people!!!!

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
I liked my unique Sicilian maiden name better, but NOBODY pronounced it correctly. My married name is only one syllable (like my first name) and it's pretty boring. But at least people can pronounce it!

My maiden name was harder to pronounce but I liked it better. My new married name is easy to pronounce but also a verb, so that brings with it a host of wise cracks.
I must really love DH for taking his name!

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
My new last name is much easier to spell and pronounce, but it sounds much OLDER, somehow. My old name was a big pain to spell or pronounce, and it sounded very ethnic, but no one could figure our what ethnicity I am. I kind of liked that actually--people would guess, and they were usually wrong.
I'm sure I'll like the new name in time.

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
I went from a very irish last name to a very italian last name so it has been wierd for me. I feel like I don't say my new last name right--it just doesn't flow as well.

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
My Madien name was a season of the year so I heard just about every remark or comment on it. My 'new' name NOBODY can say or spell, and its prononced just like it looks, so its a loose loose situation.

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
Mine sounds like 'foker' like meet the fockers. And I work in a high school... WHAT DO YOU THINK??? Big time curse!
ETA: but my maiden name was pronounced 'munch' (not spelled that way) So the kids had a field day with that too!!!
It is wierd bc my whole life everyone always called me 'munch'.. not my first name... just 'munch' and now I am Focker.... The abuse never ends.

I went to a plain, easy to pronounce last name to another equally plain, easy to pronounce last name. But I still haven't officially changed it

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
blessing mostly
My maiden name was a typical hispanic name and STILL no one could spell it so i was always spelling it over and over and over again five simple letters.
Now I have two
Still people look at me and mispell it but Im used to saying my name and spelling it and saying 'TWO LETTERS' all at once.
Signing it is E A S Y I just learned to stop putting my middle initial 'N' and just added a dot to the signature and it's now my name my maiden name and his all tied into one.
Lovin it!

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
My maiden name, noone spelled it right. My married name now is the same as a guy famous for doing bad things, so its not so great either. Its kind of cool having a diff name, regardless of what the name is.

My maiden name was easy to pronounce, but people would always think I was a differnt ethnicity than I was because of it. That was fine, but after explaining & people ignoring me, it got a little annoying.
Same here. My new last name is very ethnic, I love it and my DH and my Son have very famous initials lol

Re: Your new last name.....Blessing or a curse?
my new last name sounds funny, and i still giggle when i say it. i pronounce it differently so that it sounds a 'little better'... but then DH gets annoyed or makes fun of me
oh, and if DH had taken my last name, then he wouldve had a famous name.. but yeah, that was never an option
and i still can't sign it either... i used to have a K, and that led right into the other letters, but now it starts with a P, and that just throws my whole universe off whack
