So yesterday I was telling FH about freezing our wedding cake and how we are supposed to eat it on our one year anniversary. He goes ' w t f ? u crazy? you expect me to eat 1 year old cake??'

So then I acted all hurt and stuff, and so he agreed to eat the cake....

what's the real meaning behind eating the cake one year later?

The idea, as I read it, dates back to a tradition that said it was supposed to be the christening cake for the first child (which of course, was supposed to come 9 months after the wedding )

so, I'm not sure you're jinxed if you don't do it. I just think it would be fun, so long as it is totally frozen the whole year. . . . .

I just told FH about this and he said 'What kind of sick tradition is that?'

I'm not sure if we're going to do it, I think its kinda cute and gross at the same time!

It originated in the nineteenth century, when part of the cake was saved for the christening of the couple's first child. Over the years the tradition has evolved to where it is today: the top tier of the wedding cake is saved for the couple to eat on their first anniversary.

Re: 1 year old cake...

i'm doing it. we are both of west indian heritage and traditionally save a piece of the cake for the 1yr anniversary. we will be saving from the top tier which will be black (lots of fruit and liquor)....i've eaten this cake six months or more after it was made. so freezing it for a year is not a big deal.

noone said it had to be a meal sized portion....just save sliver or a bite

ETA: the top tier will be black cake

I haven't told him yet!! I think I'll just serve it for desert and not mention a thing until after I can imagine his face now!!! Priceless.
