2 questions
1) My wedding is 10/11, my RSVP date is 9/1. When should I mail my invites? Its it a faux pas to mail them out TOO early?
2) What type of place cards do you think I should put in these? Plain? Colored? A shape of some sort?

1) I think its Ok to send them out end of July
2) I'd go with plain cards. You dont want to take the attention away from the squirrel itself.

id say end of july, beginning of august...a month is plenty of time to fill out a card and mail it back...but then again u never know with people

i would send them around July 15th - that is 10 weeks before the wedding and 6 weeks before the RSVP due date

I would send them out btw 7/20 and 8/1 but NO Later than 8/1.
I would do either white, green or orange.

My wedding is the same day as yours and I was told to send them out the first week of August (especially since it's a holiday weekend).

1- 2 to 3 months ahead, no more than that
2- plain white card, let the squirrel be the star of the placecards! they're so cute!
