20% gratutity vs. tip

this just a questions I am taking from an earlier post.
Someone said there is a difference btwn. 20% gratuity and the tip??? So confused. The guy gave me a quote and just said it's 725$ plus gratuity.
as far as I knew gratuity = tip
Am I wrong? Help
ETA: this is in reference to Limos

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

Gratuity does equal tip in my opinion.

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

That is what I thought...UNLESS, they are trying to pull the scam of a 'mandatory 20% gratuity' and ballsily (yes, a made up word, but one appropriate for vendors who tick me off!) enough suggesting you should tip above and beyond that? Limo co's are especially guilty of this tactic.

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

Someone here who knows stated that gratuity actually pays the salary of the vendors and is not realy a tip. I forgot who said it though.

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

gratutity is a tip in my opinion. but don't forget the term service charge. some places have a service charge (which is a tip with a differnent name) and they can tax you on that. if they call it a svs charge they can tax but if it's gratuity they can't tax.

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

This makes me mad. We are back to; Hey I am a bride -- please just KEEP ON STICKING IT TO ME!
have you ever seen those news stories where they call a place and say that they want to rent a hall or get flowers for an anniversary party of X number people and it is one price but then they call back and say wedding and the price doubles!
I am feeling particularly hateful of these nonsense service charges and suggested gratuities. IMO< gratuities are earned and not suggested. If you do a good job you will be tipped very very handsomely -- I get that this is a part of you livelihood and I respect that but the word MANDATORY GRATUITY IS AN OXYMORON!

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

I agree with the others. To me gratuity=tip. They can't expect me to pay the workers salary and tip them. If that is the case I am seriously thinking about putting that tip jar on my desk!

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

Thanks for the opinons on this. Actually it was not a limo company that mentioned this to me. It was a response to a post that I wrote yesterday and it really confused me..
here is the thread. Maybe it was just a miscommunication?

Re: 20% gratutity vs. tip

what i meant was that i was quoted a rate for my limos. that includes a 20% gratuity. From what I have read on the boards, most people still tip the driver an additional amount, like $50.
