Re: 2002
not to be a pessimistbut seems like lots of ppl became unemployed this past year
i'm lucky fi and i kept our jobs
how do you guys afford kids on only one income???? or want to have a child when your husband is not working?
we're going to close this year on a house and i can't even imagine the additional cost of a child above the monthly bills we'll be paying
it'll be a while before we feel financially stable enough to have children - i want them to want for nothing and start a college fund for them etc etc...
sorry if this offends...i'm just a realist

Re: 2002
sparkles i am not offended at all. Its just the way the market and corporations are. I've been in the finance industry for 6 years and they got hit really bad. I worked for a credit card company for 5 years and a financial mangagement company for 9 months and I still have some friends at the credit card company and the company is still doing layoffs. When an industry gets hit, it gets hit really really hard. When Enron, Worldcom and other CEO's were exposed the people lost trust in their company and the trust of other companies causing people to be scared and jobs to be lost. Its a tough market out there and when you work in a certain type of industry its a survival of the fittest.
Sorry if this post offended anyone.

Re: 2002
chipatrid:i wasn't clear - i was not questioning layoffs cause i know that this year was horrible and those who kept their jobs are very lucky
what i don't get is how ppl want to have kids or manage w/kids in what is still a reallllllly expensive city on only one income
i just cant see having kids and not knowing how the rent or mortgage payments will factor into what we can or cannot do as a family or whether i can afford daycare, after school activities, music/dance lessons etc...
i definitely want children someday but when we can afford them!
those who already have kids must get by maybe scrimp a bit which isnt bad...but i still wonder how they manage...

Re: 2002
Let's see....Started the year as a newlywed
Became addicted (although I'm still working on the official title) to LIW and made some friends
Got pregnant
Had miscarriage
Celebrated first wedding anniversary
Made even more friends on LIW
All in all, it was a fantastic first year of being married, even during our last couple of months of hell -- I love my DH more and more everyday and we were able to come through the bad times closer then we were before!!! He was my rock and still is!
I'm looking forward to 2003 and the baby dust that will hopefully fall my way!!!

Re: 2002
Bearsbabe, Baby Dust for you!
Sparkles ... I think a lot of people sacrifice to live on one income. My friend just had a baby and is staying home. She was a saver, so they have money saved up and she sacrifices on a lot of things. No Coach bags for her! Plus, they put a bigger down payment on their house when they bought, so when they had a baby they could do it on one income.
Also, it seems hard now, but it does get easier ... your salary today will be more in a few years. You always struggle in the beginning!

Re: 2002
Sparkles.,I am planning to TTC as soon as DH finds a job that he loves.. He happens to be in a field where his past salary was over 6 digits.. I am happy to say that as soon as I have a child I will quit my job and stay home at least through the toddler years, then when my children go to school fulltime I will go back to work. I am hopefull obviously not definate, because you never know.. But if it was not the case with his salary at that range I would have no choice but to go back to work. However Daycare is VERY expensive (I have friends who have children in them) and if your not lucky enough to have relatives able to watch your children what else do you do.. I dont believe it pays to pay somone almost you whole salary to watch your children...
