I say nay to a formal baby shower, unless they are twins or a big gap in years from the first
I say yay to a family party w/ friends too

heavier on fhe mom gifts.
talk to me about mom gifts. examples?
Okay, well the regulars (a group of friends that we ALWAYS hang with) got together and chipped in to buy a big *** basket. We stuffed it with delicious mommy lotions and belly creams, a gift certificate for a prenatal massage and a 2nd certificate for a post baby spa day, a few gift certificates for local restaurants for post baby days when cooking is NOT an option, 2 snarky tee shirts - one that said 'Let's see what YOU look like after having 2 babies' and a 2nd that read 'Got Milk?' and a really gorgeous diaper bag that looked more like a designer handbag than a diaper sack.
If you want a GREAT diaper bag check out Petunia Pickle Bottom. They are beautiful, stylish and you can keep using them when the baby gets older.

We threw a small baby shower for my sister for her second baby. Everyone only spent maybe $20 and we had sandwhiches

Re: 2nd baby - throw a shower. yay or nay?
in an odd coincidence i dealt with this very situation today!
My co worker's wife is due any day now with her second child. I was not around when they had their first daughter (about five years ago). And he is a super nice guy.
So I went around and asked everyone if they would like to contribute a few dollars. I was going to make up a big basket for him and present it to him at a small 'gathering' at my job - i was thinking of making cupcakes for it. . .
Well, that idea was shot down very quickly. Basically everyone thought I was nuts and they said they went to his shower at work when they had it and no one wanted to contribute.
So I will be making a smaller basket on my own, after she has the baby.
Just wanted to share my experience!

Nay. But if it has been a while and the person does not have a ton of gift-expecting occasions, maybe it is okay. My mom says,'one to a customer.' I also think that anyone close to the person will send a baby gift anyway, so no need to put a 'request' out.

Yay if parents don't have anything anymore from 1st baby. They would have to rebuy everything.
Nay if they still have a bunch of stuff from 1st baby. I would still celebrate though just on a smaller scale.

Today it is appropriate. I cant think of anyone I know who did not have a small shower for their second.
I think its great. Especially if the baby is a different sex than the first. It doesnt mean you need to buy the big things all over, but its nice to buy clothes and celebrate adding a new baby into the world.
I also know of some people who have thrown their own showers, invited people to their house and paid for everything.
I would never think badly towards someone who had a second shower. Besides I did :)
ETA: I guess my family and friends are different and I just got lucky

It is the 'norm' to NOT have one for subsequent children, but usually if there is one, it's more of a party OR in my case, because several years between the first and second child. We had ZILCH for this baby and have spent the whole pregnancy buying everything all over again. [6 years for me.] For the rest, hopefully only a couple/few years pass, not 6 so I won't need or anticipate a shower then.
I actually missed my first shower b/c my great-grandmother died that week and I was away for the funeral. So in reality, the shower I had on Sunday for baby #2 was my first shower.
eta- This is also the first baby for DH and his family so everyone was THRILLED to celebrate with a shower even though it's my second. In fact, his rather traditional family was the first to start asking when the shower would be!
