I was wondering how many nights a week your wee one makes their way into your bed?

Re: 3 in the Bed
I said 2-3...but, I need to explain...Paul NEVER starts a night in our bed. If he is with us, it's usually around 5:30-6:00AM, when we are just too tired AND lazy to rise and shine and begin our day. We have tried to just tuck him between us, and all doze for another hour...but, it only happens on very rare occasions when Paul actually wakes that early. Lately, he's been sleeping until 7:30-8:00AM, so we have NO EXCUSE not to get up then!

Re: 3 in the Bed
NEVER!! Not even when he is sick!!
My brother slept with my mom as a baby, as my dad worked 2 jobs and she did not want him to be woken up in the middle of the night. She Bf and it was quikcer to comfort him if he was right next to her. Well fast foward 3 years later and she now had to lock him out of her room.
I cannot tell you how many mornings I awoke to the sound of my brother pounding on my mothers door screaming let me in I dont want to sleep in my bed!! Or falling asleep to him screaming while my mom or dad was trying to convince him to sleep in his bed.
It was a horrible habit to break and it upset my mother dearly that she had to force my brothers independece on him.
I just dont want to have to deal with that situation. So I avoid it all costs.
As a child I never slept in my parents bed. If I awoke in the middle of the night and I was scared or sick my mom made a bed for me on the floor of there room. So I guess for me It just doesnt seem like a really good idea.
Okay, so I know I did more than answer a simple ?. Sory!!

Re: 3 in the Bed
Patrick will wake up at like 3:00am (we share a room (which I think is the main reason this happens) I try to stay awake till he goes to sleep so I can put him back in his crib. But I'm usually just SO tired!
I would normally let him cry but I don't want him to wake up my downstairs neighbors. (I can hear their tv so I'm sure they can hear him loud & clear)

Re: 3 in the Bed
I think when you share a room and have close neighbors it is very hard to 'let the baby cry'. Maybe you can get him used to napping by himself and tell him that Mommy's bed is only for mommy and daddy..not easy though.

Re: 3 in the Bed
I don't have a child- but I want to say that I found my way into my parents bed ALL the time- I actually used to wake up in the middle of the night and yell for my daddy to come & get me & he did. My mom pretty much let me determine when i had enough- and eventually I did and just stopped all on my own. She did the same thing with the pacifier as well.. she never made mention, never forced it from me- just let it be.. She raised me very hippy dippy 70s where nothing was 'on a timeline' and I think I want to raise my kid that way too- it was a very relaxed way to grow up...

Re: 3 in the Bed
So far JA is rarely in our bed. Maybe a weekend morning when we are hanging out and just playing with him. I dont plan on getting to the habit of 3 in a bed (who knows what the toddler years have in store for us!! )
Sassy-your mention of your mom never taking the binky from you reminded me of a friend of mine.... her daughter is FIVE, yes 5 ! and she still drinks milk from a bottle (and her mom has no problem with it) She is in kindergarten!! So I think at times, mommies need to draw the line, but I think it worked out great for you that you were a big girl and were able to draw your own lines! The binky, I feel bad taking it away cold turkey... so im still in the predicament.. I can take it away for hours and he's fine, but when he's cranky its just SOOO comforting to him...

Re: 3 in the Bed
I voted 0-1 because he never really does except like Claud does where he comes in the bed sometimes if he wakes real early AND I can't get up. When he was smaller, I use to bring him into the bed and I loved it. I swear I took up 3 inches of space so Luke could spread out and DH still had his 1/2 of the bed. But DH didnt want to get into the habit of the baby in the bed so I use to just do it when he worked overnight, not sneaking it, DH knew I did it but just there was more room. But once he got too big and I was afraid he'd crawl off, I had to stop. But IMO I dont think it's the best thing to do. My nephew is 3 and always sleeps in their bed-sometimes either my BIL or SIL have to sleep on the couch, which doesn't seem like the best thing for a marriage to get into that habit. I know attachment parenting parents will disagree) But I really did love having his cuddly little body there last winter. A sleeping child is so beautiful and I loved just watching him sleep. I still do but I just sneak into his bedroom and watch him sleep in his crib now. The other night I just wanted to cuddle him (getting all sentimental with his bday coming up) so I brought him into the bed like old times and he rolled around so much, I had to put him back in the crib.

Re: 3 in the Bed
I used my binky till the day before I was enrolled in Kindergarten... I just gave it to my mother and told her I was done!
But in terms of the bed thing- I fell asleep in my mom's bed (my parents were already divorced) up until I was at LEAST 7 and she would carry me to my own bed. She never bothered me about it- and again, one day I just said I wanted to go to bed by myself. The way she saw it was I needed to be there for some reason.
Also- I think she was affected by the fact that my Grandma stopped her from sucking her thumb when she was like 1 year old and my mom never got over it- she STILL sucks her thumb sometimes in her sleep (she'd kill me if she knew I told you all) but- I guess she didn't want that to happen to me, ya know?

Re: 3 in the Bed
I guess I'm in the minority! Lyla is 4 months old, and I've been cosleeping for the most part. We transitioned her to her crib, it worked for about 2 weeks for the night, but then she just won't have it. If I want her to sleep in her crib, I'm in her room trying to get her back to sleep about 10 times in 12 hours!

Niha, good luck with that! Its hard to break a habit with little ones, especially sleeping habits.

Re: 3 in the Bed
Anna, I know that is why we tried the crib when she was 3 months. I didn't think it was too late. Right now, I'm taking it day by day. I need my sanity, and if it means having her in my bed, that'll do for now. I'm not kidding when I say she's up 10 times a night. I can't do the CIO either.

Re: 3 in the Bed
Claud I said 2-3 also. The same thing happens with Emma sleeping in her crib then in our bed between 5-6. It must be the age.
NIHA - Until Emma was 9 months old we all slept together. Because of my c-section it was hard to sit up in bed to get her 3 times a night from the craddle next to the bed. I brought her in bed with us. She slept great for a couple months then she started waking up every couple hours. I put her to sleep in her crib and she slept like a dream. All in due time if you can stand it. I couldnt let her CIO.

Re: 3 in the Bed
ok whats CIO, maybe its too late and my brai is mush right now
I think I would have had him in the bed as a newborn, but I was really nervous with rolling over on him or even leaning on him, because with being so sleep deprived, I think one would sleep even more 'heavily' than normal. Even thoough they say the mommy instinct kicks in even in your sleep But I agree with Liz, I LOVE just watching him sleep or feeling his warm little body sleeping...

Re: 3 in the Bed
I know I'm not a mom, but have plenty of nieces and nephews. Wouldn't you say that some children may 'need' to sleep with mommy more in some cases? All of our neices and nephews are so different, and one in particular had a strong 'need' to sleep with mom and dad. I couldn't say where this came from though??
A slight tangent...when I was young I used to hear my dad leave for work at 11 at night and I would run into my mom's room to sleep. In the last 10 years my dad's been in the hospital a few times, and I still slept in my mom's bed with her when he wasn't home

Re: 3 in the Bed
jeng- I agree with you, every baby's needs are different. I know now that the reason Lyla was waking up so much was not out of hunger, b/c she was too cold/hot, uncomfortable, or anything else besides that she wants to sleep next to her mommy. I went 2 weeks trying NOT to bring her in my bed, and I was up anywhere from every 15 min to 1 hour. She would fall alseep in my arms (she doesn't just go to sleep if you put her down tired like the books say to do) and I put her down when she's in a deep sleep. Something wakes her (it's not teething or reflux) and she can't get back to sleep. Peter tries to get her to sleep, and her cries just escalate into screams. When we cosleep, it's very peaceful, she never fusses or cries.
Also, I have to stop listening to people (family members, strangers) that say I am developing bad 'habits' (cosleeping, picking her everytime she cries, holding her ALOT). To me, these are my daughters needs, not habits that are unbreakable. It's hard to explain to people who don't have babies with higher needs. It's come to a point, where I end up not talking about it, or even lying about what I do, b/c I don't want to hear it from others!
I also read somewhere that many more parents cosleep than we think! Maybe others hide it too?
kp-it's nice to know that you were able to make that transition at 9 months.
