My BM at my RH told us the MD usually gets around 500 and the BA gets around 150...does that sound right to you???
I have to say I was SHOCKED that the MD gets 500 and what about the BM I have been working with all along- how much does he/she get?
I didnt realize I needed another budget just for all the tipping lol!!

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
A friend of mine who used to be a banquet manager told us that $2 - $4 per person is the norm. I think we ended up giving around $400.

That's about right. But I totally agree its ridiculous. I don't think its right that they tell you how much you have to tip. I know a MD does a lot (or at least I think they do) but come on who gets paid $500 for one night's worth of work. It's their job. Rant over :)

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
CLM charges a $300 'MD fee'...but my BM told me that it's really 'not' completely for the MD. He said it is split among the MD, chef, BA, etc. He also went on to tell me that should not be considered his tip.

Tip what you feel is appropriate. But by all mean, argue if they want to put in on the contract.
My RH wanted to put it in the contract and I made them take it off.
But yes, a $3-$5 tip is appropriate. It really depends on the number of people you are having and the price per head. And of course, how happy you are with their service at the end of the night.

It's not one night's worth of work. Your BM will finalize everthing for you. They will make sure your tables are set up. The will meet with you those last few weeks to go over all the details. They will spend time coordinating the wedding before you arrive. I don't think $500 is unreasonable. Especially because they don't make alot of money from the RH itself.

This might be a silly questions but what is the difference in roles between the MD and the BM... I know the BA is suppose to help me all night...

Banquet Manager is the person you typically book with. Typically, they are the people in charge of getting new clients and the overall flow of the place.
The MD is the person in charge of your party on the day of the affair. Their only priority is your room, your guests, and to make sure everything runs smoothly. They are the ones who you finalize your menu with.
Think of it as the BM in charge of the business, and the MD in charge of the operation.

Typically the maitre d tip us between $3- $5 pp depending on service. The banquet manager (the person who has been working with you all along) does NOT get tipped unless they have thrown in a ton of free things for you and really went way above and beyond...they get a percentage of what you pay the RH as a commission....so you don't need to tip your BM, only the maitre d and your bridal attendants.
I tipped my bridal attendant $100 and maitre d $400 (we had about 100 guests including us). Remember that they can't really *tell you* what to tip-they can only make suggestions. ALL tips are dependent on service...

They are usually not the same person. The BM is the one who organizes all the details of your wedding. The maitre d you usually don't meet until your day, he/she organizes the party and makes sure everything runs smoothly and on schedule like cake cutting, when the dessert is served etc. Also the maitre d gets tipped, and the BM doesn't as they get a percentage (commission) off of what you pay to the RH.

Wow, I guess my RH did it differently. When I had a bunch of questions they told me best to meet with my MD because they would know best.

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
i think my BM is also my MD...but now im confused. well, i hope it is the same person, cuz i like him and wouldnt mind tipping him. ....on the other hand, if i barely speak to this new person, i would probably go on the lower side of tipping just because i dont know them....

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
We gave the MD $600, but she split that with the waitstaff, bartendars, valet, etc. It doesn't all go to the MD. I gave my BA $100.
And my BM & MD were 2 different people. I didn't meet my MD until the day of.

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
My tip is built into the contract and I believe it''s $450. I thought that was reasonable. Some places tell you anywhere from $2-$7 pp. I agree, it's alot, considering you are paying a small fortune for the wedding to begin with

ALL tips are dependent on service... I totally agree with you on this one....the tip is totally dependent on service. If they suck, you should be able to tip them less and if they are great, more. My sister had a horrible experience with her Maitre d and she ended up not tipping him at all.

Re: $500 tip for the MD???
Your BA isn't included in your contract for overall gratuity? I was told we only had to tip the MD. Which I know $400 - $500 is normal.

that was my understanding as well from what the BM explained to us, I unserstood that we give somewhere between $3-$5 pp to MD who splits it then with 2 captains that are his assistants thru out the evening. BM said that they are the only ones who do not participate in the gratuity charge we pay that is in the contract. so therefor BA's aren't suppose to be tipped
