Re: 9/11/11 Reception

I defninately could never have a wedding on that day. To me it's not a day for celebrations.

But if I was invited to a wedding on that day I would think it's a little strange, but I wouldn't not go.

I just couldn't do it for myself.

if you and FH's families weren't personally touched by it, then I think there has been enough time that has passed. I understand people whose families are in law enforcement are very sensitive to it. For me, i don't know anybody who lost their life that day, but I do know it would be a bit of a shock.

I think its really up to you to decide. I grew up in lower manhattan and my apartment faced WTC, i went to elementary school and JHS down there. My entire youth was spent hanging out at the WTC, chilling with my friends so 9/11 always brings sad memories for me. And to me, the memory of 9/11 haunts me everytime i wake up in the morning at my mom's house and look out the window that used to face the towers and no longer see them there. But thats just my feelings. Personally i dont think anyone can tell you how to proceed with picking the day of your reception. I would be torned personally. On the one hand, the day means so much to everyone, not just NYers but people around the country (the families of those who died at the Pentagon for example) and you dont want to 'celebrate' on such a tragic day. But on the other hand, while it is a day of mourning, its also a day to remember to never take life for granted. A wedding or a baby's birth to me is the best way to show how life goes on and we cant let a group of psychos take our spirit and control our lives. So its truly up to you to decide.

Perhaps you can incorporate things into your ceremony like having a moment of silence during part of your reception to pay respect for those who passed away, maybe instead of favors you can donate money to the 9-11 fund. Whatever you do, Good Luck!

granted I didn't live in NY on that day but I don't think it's a bad thing. To me it's like you are celebrating life and how we still move on and live each day to the fullest! I guess the patriotic person in me says party on and show those &^%&%&$ who flew a plane into our home that they can't bring us down! Just my two cents

ITA with this and i do live in NY!!! i think that even though it is the 10th anniversary and people will be sad i think that if its the day you want the people that love you and the people that you mean something to will show up no matter what day it is! and im not trying to sound unamerican because i too knew people that died on that day but if you do a remembrance im sure people will appreciate that.

it should be what day you want it to be and if it happens to be that date so be it and people will show.

I think it depends..If you have guests that lost loved ones than I would say no...BUT I know a friend that go married on that day and it was beautiful. I think its a great way to take a day known for tragedy and turn it into a day of beauty. I say go for it!!

If you already booked, there is not much you can do unless you can change it, but I personally would never make a wedding on such a somber day. Many people were affected by that day both personally and impersonally and know someone who has passed. I think it is a day of rememberance and not partying. I am all for embracing life and living, but this is a hard day. It is also a 10 year anniversary.

Take all this into consideration. I know u love the hall and love Sept, but is it really worth that day?

Most other years, I would say -- it would be 'okay' to have it on 9/11 because it would actually be a great way to bring joy to those on that day.... I also think having a reference or rememberance table would be important and help ease the 'elephant in the room'. However -- this year will be the 10th anniversary, so media coverage will be even more so than usual. It might be even more so at the forefront of everyone's mind. It's a tough call : /

I agree with this 100%... With it being the 10th anniversary media coverage is going to be focused on it even more. Your anniversary will forever be on 'that' day. My aunt was married on 9/11 but many years ago and it's hard for her to celebrate her annviersary b/c no matter what she knows what happened that day. even though it wasn't the same year.. she avoids the TV and newspapers when that day rolls around.

I believe in never forgetting but remembering and moving on - but there are other options out there so i think you need to look at the bigger picture.

Re: 9/11/11 Reception

Thanks for all the responses. I am having the ceremony on a different day because according to my tradition we have a ceremony on day 1 then the reception the next day. I have spoken to most of my guest and they will be able to make it that day and they did not lose anyone on that day either. None of my guest were personally effected on 09/11, I booked my hall but still, I'm considering changing the date. I've been calling weekly to find out if anyone cancelled, I'm hoping someone will. I'm honestly not having the reception on that day because of savings but because it was the only weekend day avaiIable in September, October and November. I originally wanted a Saturday night as well, but sometimes we don't get exactly what we want. I also think it will be a great idea to do a donation that day as well.

You could do a donation to the 9/11 fund....maybe this will ease it in?
