Hi, I am having my wedding ceremony on 9/10/11 and will have my reception at my dream hall on 09/11/11. I really wanted to get married in September, I love the weather that time of the year, the only date available however was 9/11. I spoke to a few friends that felt that its not a good day to have a reception and some felt that nothing is wrong having a reception that day. I live in NY and don't want to show any disrespect in anyway, however I'm really torn because we got a good deal on the hall and it was the only day available in September and October. Has anyone else had a 9/11 wedding or reception. What''s your honest opinion on having a reception on that day.

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
I personally couldn't do it and I would feel weird as a guest getting ready to party during such a somber time in NY.

ufff! that's a tough decision! I personally wouldn't choose that date, just because it brings sorrow and bad memories to me, but it might be different for another person

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
My grandparents had their 60th anniversary party on 9/11/10 and they were concerned about that too.... but I have to tell you everyone was able to celebrate with them and have a great time.
I totally understand why you are concerned, but I don't think anyone would take it as disrespect by any means.

You know the tone of your guests....If it were my family, Ithink they would be fine with me choosing that date. If you and your family had a personal loss, then I would consider changing the date...otherwise, stick with it

I would not do it, you might be ok with it but maybe some of your guests aren't. This is just my opinion though. Good luck!

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
My MOH's mom got married that day and she picked it specifically knowing it was a cheaper day to get married. My MOH was very upset and felt that it was not a day to hold a wedding.
I lost my father that day so although I would not refuse to go to a wedding, it would be a very hard day for me to get through. I still can't have a normal day now on the anniversary- I need to take the day off from work b/c sometimes people can be so naive and pretend this day is like any other. I also understand that everyone has suffered loss so there are some days that feel like this to them. However, 9/11 affected everyone and I just feel like it should be a day of remembering, not celebrating.
Lastly, just as a reminder, the day you are considering is the 10 year anniversary which is going to be a milestone and looked at differently than other anniversaries in the past. Just keep that in mind as well,

Honestly, I wouldn't do it but my Dad was NYPD and lost many friends that day so I wouldn't do it out of respect for him.

I agree. I think it can be totally fine if you or a family member didn't have a personal loss on that day.

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
my gut reaction was ~ have it. some people will ALWAYS have something to say. But after reading the other responses ~ this is a tough call. there has to be a balance of rememberance and of life continuing. I'm sure people get married on the anny of pearl harbor. but is it too soon for nine eleven? tough!! go with your gut...why cant u do the night of ur ceremony?
~using my phone sorry for grammar

I'm really sorry about your dad. God bless him.
And the 10 year anniversary thing is a good point.
I wanted a September wedding too and I specifically veered away from that whole weekend. I wouldn't want my anniversary on that day, either... I didn't suffer a personal loss but it's such a dark day in history, especially in NY... I dunno. Tough call.

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
if you didnt live in NY i would say go for it
im all about moving on and celebrating life, I just worry about the overall feel of the wedding, I personally know 3 people who were lost that day its a day of remembrance for so many
If your already booked, i guess there isnt much you can do
but im really surprised you, as a bride, would want such a notorious date as your wedding date.
Plus everyone would know you got a great deal on the hall, cause of that date.... i would worry about people judging me over it
its a tough call
i know 2 people with 9/11 birthdays, who by no fault of their own obviously, now 2nd guess b-day parties
just make sure saving the money, and this dream hall is really worth the date

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
I wouldn't do it especially since its 10 years this year. If I had a wedding to go to on that day, not sure if I'd go. I came close to losing my father that day and don't think I'd be up for celebrating at a wedding.
Do what you want. Don't go by what we all say. If that day is what you want since you got a great deal from the hall and the only September date they have, then do it.

Re: 9/11/11 Reception
I wouldnt do it, that date means too much already. I would want my wedding day to be on a day not connected with such a tragedy.
