when you have to give your final numbers, tel them 5 people less than the rsvp counts ... that way, when (yes, i said 'when' and not 'if') people drop out, you won't have to pay for them anyhow.

i did 2 less bc i wanted to try and get away with not pay for me and dh but 2 pople cancelled so it worked out perfectly!

i spoke to my RH and they said i can do it this way ... when i give my final counts (2 days before the wedding), i will give the correct numbers.

5 is not a crazy number at all....wedding I went to last night there were SEVEN last minute cancellations ,hence why FH and I got invited on Friday night.
I too plan on doing something like this.....I like the idea of holding place cards hostage and maybe have someone like my mom give this person their card.

This is what we did...handed everything in and then the next day had a cancelation. We adjusted the numbers minus 4 and it worked it great.

you can always add one or two the day before but you can't take away. so leaving a few out at final count is a good idea.

We had two people drop out a few days before. But we had two people show up the day of we thought couldn't come.
If you're going to tell them less than your final count- make sure you have extra cash day of in case you have to add on

agreed!! we had two people who didn't show up (never called or anything), but we also had two people who came who rsvp'd 'no'. I'd be careful! I think this is more of an 'if' than a 'when' situation.

we had 7 people not show up for the wedding that we paid for (2 gave a real generous gift and had an emergency though)

We had 3 people not show up, the RH gave our paid meals to the band since we didn't have to pay for all 8 of them to eat (we only did 5 vendor meals for them the others were suppose to eat at the CH) so it worked out that all of them got a dinner.

well, some people are genuine emergencies ... others are just stupid.
but regardless, you still need to pay for people who don't show up.
as others have mentioned, you can always add people, but you can't remove them.

ouch, that stinks .... try to get the RH to use that towards vendors or free upgrades ... if they can't do that, then invite some fillers
