A new thread - the STUPIDEST comments you have gotten from ppl about YOUR wedding...

Original post by Miblove

I need a goooooood vent

So here's mine:

2 year engagement ?! Wow, that's long
Are you offering to contribute $ so I can move it up?

Black bm dresses?! Why dont you do a color? weird look
My wedding, my choice - do I criticize you on your tacky attire?

(my fmil to my fh - of course, I wasnt there)
Dont embarrass me w/ this wedding (after he told her how our place is modern, ch on roof, 2 dinner choices only)

I dont think it's right to do donations as favors - if ppl want to donate, they'll do it on their own - when ppl go to a wedding, they want to get something
HELLO it is 2007 and umm, half the stuff I get at weddings I throw out or collects dust & plus I'm doing it in memory of family members

this tread is great~

I got engaged on 5/28 and I am getting married 8/9/2008 people around me keep asking why we are having it so late. and mostly everyone knows that my FH is still in school. so I always need to explain that he has school. Then they ask 'why dont you have it during his winter break in Dec.' and they tell me that if I stay engaged for too long we will end up getting a DIVORCE..........

also, I stressed the fact that I dont want to have my wedding at a korean restaurant. So I told my FMIL that we looked at leonards and she got all upset saying 'your Korean guest wont be comfortable there and they will not come and its too far' Most of all my guests live in Queens/LongIsland except for a few of my FH's Family. I was like thinking to myself.. its OUR wedding not hers..

this tread is great~~~

Your engagement is not long at all--mine was almost 2 years! We just ignored the comments and eventually they stopped--I used to tell everyone that we have been doing things in our own time frame so why should we stop now.

MIL: [I}'When we got married we did it in the back yard with a guy from Universal Life Church and I wore a crown of flowers in my hair and a white minidress. We had a little party in the backyard. Wouldn't that be nice? Then we can have all the cats there too.'

Tell her it is not 1960 any longer and you do not live in San Francisco where they wear 'flowers in their hair'.

Yes. We calmly explained that, but she still liked the idea...

MIL also:
Do I really have to buy a new dress? I have one that fit me really well and looks fabulous on me.
ME:
Oh yeah? Where is it? What'd you wear it to?
MIL:
Well...it's kinda old and I wore to a function once.
ME:
How old is it?
MIL:
I wore it around 1980 or so, but I'm sure it will only need a little alteration.
DH:
There is NO WAY you are wearing a dress that old and look ridiculous.

Oh boy!!! You need to bring her into the real world......I would never think of wearing an old dress to my child's wedding. Try to get her to look on here at all the moms and what they are wearing or wore for their children's wedding. Good luck sweetie!

My mom did a REAL NICE one to me last night!

MOB-Um, so I guess I can't invite everyone from my office.
ME-Well, no, we are over as it is.
MOB-Do you really think that's fair, I am the mother of the bride...
ME-Well I AM THE BRIDE...
MOB-You got to invite everyone from YOUR job...
ME-Well yeah cause, wait a minute...GOODNIGHT MOM!!

38 more days people, RSVP date is THIS FRIDAY and she is STILL trying to add people, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm NO

That is a good one! Thank God my parents are retired. My Mom is so not into inviting her friends but my Dad (they are divorced) on the other hand is into inviting all his friends since he's been a teenager and that 'have known me my whole life' uggghh

this is my fh's dad... he wants to invite the guys he grew up with on 135th block in harlem.. mind u his dad is 78.. and his dad's friends are in their late 70;s as well..

fh is a bit crazy too because he said something bout having the dj play an hour of doo wop (apparently the favorite music of his dad and his dad's friends)and for a special table with a SIGN that says 135th block.. i said are u nuts? this isn't a high school reunion.. this is OUR wedding.. (to which might I add, his parents have NOT contributed.. but yet they want special seating for their friends..) there will be NO special tables, and if the dj plays ONE doo wop song it will be during the cocktail hour and u'r dad will take it, and be happy about it

Here are a few that come to mind:

Random people:
'You're getting married? But you're sooo young!' [um, I may LOOK young, but I'm 25... pretty normal age if you ask me]

My brother:
'Weddings are such a waste of money! You should have just gone to city hall and gotten it over with.' and
'Don't change your last name. It'll be so annoying when you get divorced and you're stuck with his name.'

My mother:
'What do you mean you're not wearing stockings?!?! That's so un-ladylike!' and
'You're not wearing the veil over your face!?!? But it's tradition!' and
'So many girls have BOTH parents walk them down the aisle... isn't that what you want?' [no and she knew that, but was trying to guilt me]

Great thread.

I also am having a two year engagement and got all those comments. but they do stop eventually.

the receptionist at my office keeps saying she can't wait to go and all the other girls in my office too (about 5 ). but I'm not inviting them (so far). I'm probably in my office one day out of the month. I've been there for 4+ years but still... my idea is if you've never invited me to your home or vice versa, you're not invited.

I get all the weight comments and i get the 'it's so far away don't even talk about it to me' comments. but I'm super busy so it's not that far for me It's been over a year already and all we've done is RH, photog & video.

My Grandma after telling her that FH and i were engaged:

'Oh thank goodness, I thought we were going to have to send you to the Nunery'

Thanks Gram! I was only 25 when I got engaged!

great thread!

i stopped speaking to my brother for a while cuz he totally pissed me off with a few comments. when i told him we were engaged, the first words out of his mouth was 'are you sure?' and continued to advise me to go to marriage counseling to make sure.

he's separated from his wife, so i know where it was coming from. but he didnt have to be such an ***.

Ive had people comment that while a donation favor is nice- people will be expecting something to take home. Do people realllllly care if we dont give them a favor?

Got the same comment when I said no favors. Something about, that I couldn't not do that.
Well, I did it anyways - no favors.

Favors - that is an American thing. People from other countries don't do that.

But usually I would get the 'But it's tradition' reply - so, we are a non-traditional couple, so why stick to tradition especially if it is an American tradition and I am not American.
or another classic - 'that's the way everybody does it'
what do I care? It's our wedding, so we give a %^#% about what others do.
Or: 'You can't do this because it's against etiquette' - ok, no comment here. Etiquette - dictated by the wedding business industry

And if everyone is spending thousands on the wedding, why not thinking about less fortunate ones?
I don't think the guests would disagree..their 'favor' is being there...and everyone should keep that in mind.

Besides, most favors are 'kitsch' anyways, manufactured in China by workers that are paid 2 $ a day and shipped long distance for weeks .

Sometimes I wish people would be more considerate - especially on a day like a wedding day.

Just my 2c

Oh yea i have another one from my sister (my MOH)

' i get to pick out the BM dresses no pink, no light color, nothing long, no straps'

I told her I want a long light colored dress and its my wedding not hers. I told her she can wear no straps..

THEN SHE SAID

' If you pick out a long dress I'm going to cut mine'

I'm not making a donation OR giving a favor. Maybe I'm stingy.
Most of the comments are from my mother:

1. Ivory? Won't the dress look dirty?

2. OK, so my parents' house (where I grew up) is on the same little waterway as the RH...so I thought it would be awesome if my dad rowed me to the ceremony....how cool would that be??? My mom's response: 'This will NOT be a CIRCUS!' I've decided that Circus is my new wedding theme, and FH will wear a red nose down the isle, and I will wear a rainbow wig.

I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

I love the 'when are you getting engaged?' one - hilarious!

xo

that sounds so sweet for your dad to row you into the party. Now if you were on an elephant or something that would definitly be circus. LOL

Since i was 38 when we got engaged, my cousin's wife said, 'At your age, why don't you just get married in a couple of months'.

Me: I really can't afford it.

Her: At your age, you don't have any $ in the bank

Me:(felt like saying) Yeah I do biitch, but its none of your freaken business how long we wait.

We had a 14 month engagement.

That's just plain rude

I got a good one!!! One of my bridemaids is African American and my aunt actually says to me:

'Isn't it going to look funny in the pictures if there's only one black person in your bridal party??'

I got this one too. only it was alitle worse.

I am having one of my best friends who happens to be a black, gay, male (not that it should matter to anyone) as my 'bridesman'. He will stand on my side but will have the same attire as the groomsmen. Since I only have 4 girls and my bridesman and FH has 5 guys, one of his guys has to walk with my bridesman. not a big deal, lets be adult about it, they don't have to hold hands down the isle or anything.

a friend said
'he's not going to wear a dress is he'

another comment I got was
'he knows that the other groomsmen are married right, so he won't hit on them'

and another
'wont that make him uncomfortable since he is on your side and he's black and gay'
(He doesn't have a rainbow on his tux, geez!)

and finally my FMIL sent FH a voicemail last night
'I feel bad for the groomsman that has to walk with 'the guy' it's just embarrassing'

Why are people so stupid

First of all, we live in the 21st century, get with it. Second...No, he won't wear a dress, give me a break. Third..No he won't be uncomfortable b/c of his race/sexual preference. Will you? and Fourth, are f*cking 5 yrs old, he doens't have cooties.

I would be so ashamed and embarrassed if he ever heard these people talk like this. I just don't understand people sometimes.

Re: A new thread - the STUPIDEST comments you have gotten from ppl about YOUR wedding...

people have this idea of what a wedding means to them and try to fit their ideals with everyone else's as if we as a race do things exactly the same. but we're all snowflakes, completely different from the next, but still made up of mostly water - just decorated differently. people need to accept that and not impose their beliefs & ideals on the bride & groom as if it was them who were joining in marriage.

stand up for what you believe in and tell these f'ers to write their most precious wedding ideas down for when they plan their own wedding.

i swear, people think so highly of their ideals as if we don't have any of our own? who the heck do they think they are?!

i plan, therefore i vent.

Re: A new thread - the STUPIDEST comments you have gotten from ppl about YOUR wedding...

the day after i got engaged my Mom, Grandma and Sister came up from Florida and stayed at my apartment for 2 weeks.....so we all go to my aunt's house to visit and of course spread the news.......so my uncle (my Mom's brother) says hello and doesnt say anything to us- everyone else congratulates me......later on he comes up to me when i'm alone and says:

'i didnt want to say anything, b/c i didnt know if your mother knew yet - i didnt want to be the one to ruin the surprise....'

UMMMMMM is he that much of an a$$hole that he thinks that: A. FH wouldn't ask for my parents blessing B. That I wouldn't call my Mother right away and tell her that I was engaged C. that my Mother, Grandma and Sister who came from Florida and were staying in my house wouldn't know? HELLO thats the reason they were coming!!!! He thinks that because I fought with my mother alot when I was a teenage (ummm don't most teenage girls fight with their parents) that I don't get along with her now.....hello my Mom is like my best friend - and that was like 10 years ago!!!

and then during our stay I pretended that I didn't hear my other uncle say:

'you better go to Macys and get that thing appraised, you can't trust nobody these days, how do you know he didnt get you a cubic'

i pretended that i didnt even hear him - and then 10 minutes later I made sure to tell everyone how we both couldnt wait to go to Macys to get the ring appraised so we could get it insured.....
