about the boy/girl thing in TCOYF...and other questions

Original post by LisaT

for those that have read it - what did you think about the part that explaining how you could try to determine the sex of your baby based on when you had sex?

have any of you tested that theory?

also, for those of you that got pregnant without charting, ov. tests. etc - did you do anything special other than not use birth control and go at it?

I'm just trying to get a feel for how often conception just happens without special timing...
When the time comes, I don't want to make getting pregnant a process (if I can avoid it).

(not trying, and not ready - just getting educated)

I got the book and read the book while we were trying. Basically we got pregnant right away. Not sure if the book helped at all or not..............

Lisa I found your post.

I don't believe in the counting the days thing. My friends got prego one & 2 days after their period, another when they tried for the 1st time, no counting etc.

I like this post. Not ready yet Anna, but am in the same boat as Teri and LisaT - just want to get educated for when the time does come (in a couple of years).
Maybe, I should check out this book.

Re: about the boy/girl thing in TCOYF...

We wanted to just see what happens at first too. But when the first month goes by and then even the second goes by -- I thought I really need some help.

I got TCOYF -- it was a wealth of information. BUT...not all of it is totally accurate. The author really emphasizes checking your CM as the best indicator. Well I don't really have any and she barely discusses what to do if you don't have any. When I talked to my doctor this week she said that CM is not a very accurate indicator anyway.

So while TCOYF is great to understand what is going on with your body -- it's not a sure fire way to get pregnant.

Edited to add: The good thing about charting is that if you have a problem conceiving at least you have good information to bring to your doctor. My doctor got to see when we were timing DTD and my temps to reflect ovulation, etc. It was a great resource. Otherwise she probably would have told me to come back in another six months.

I agree that a big part of it is mother nature and you can do everything right and still not let it happen. Many of my friends who didn't use any methods -- just went at it -- got pregnant right away (within one or two months) so they didn't have to worry about temperature, numbers, etc.

For us it hasn't worked that way. So I need a little help from the medical world. I never thought I would resort to taking fertility drugs. Now I am. I'm not sure how far I will go with this though b/c I feel like if it's supposed to be it's supposed to be. If it's not -- it will break my heart -- but I would want to think about adoption.

That's my 2 cents and we are now on our sixth month of TTC.

A friend of mine sent me this Chinese Gender Chart, it was correct with her two children, my son and everyone else I checked. It says I am having a girl this time, so we will see. It's just for fun but thought you girls might enjoy and I would like your imput on its accuracy for those who have children already.

The chinese gender chart says Girl for me, that's what I thought!

It says boy for me, and so did the psychic I saw a few months ago.
The Chinese chart was wrong for 3 out of 4 of my friends though.

Re: about the boy/girl thing in TCOYF...and other questions

I just read this thread, but I posted in Jennbaby's thread asking a similar question. I didn't read this book, nor did I read or buy anything else about it. I knew when I was going to ovulate and did the 'deed' on the 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th and 15th days after my period (how happy was my hubby? ) and sure enough got pregnant.

This time around, I didn't do a blessed thing and didn't pay attention to the date because I wasn't ready to start trying again, and bingo, was a bit shocked to discover I was pregnant -- might be TMI right here, but right after we did the dance, , Joe turns around and tells me that we just 'made a baby'!!! And sure enough, he was right!

Let me tell you the first month you are really hoping you are pregnant and you get your AF, all the fun is gone. I cried every time my AF arrived. If you are planned time of person- like I am- waiting for months and months of 'just seeing what happens' is NOT fun at all, PLUS without charting you have NO idea if you are actually ovulating. You can get your AF every month and have an ovulation problem. I used fertitlityfriend.com had the charting was not hard at all. I took my temp every morning before getting out of bed. That simple act gave me more information about myself then I ever knew before. I don't ovulate on Day 14! I ovulate on Day 18. If I had not been charting I would have been TTC on Day 14, and it would have not worked at all. Also, without charting, if you do find you are having a problem you have very little information to give the doctors. With a chart you can say 'Here is my chart and it shows that I am only ovulating every other month or I have been TTC on the correct and still nothing'. Without the chart you are blind.
Anyway to answer you question Shamma- your are right- you are born with a certain number of eggs and that's it. Women do not produce new eggs as they get older. Every time you get your AF, your egg is 'wasted' or goes unused and your body begins for another month of possible conception. women go into menapause when their eggs are almost all gone, and then eventually we have none left. What age you go into menapause is often aligned to your mom- when did she start menapause? Also, after 35 your chances of getting pg significantly decrease BUT you can get pregnant very often.

See all this darn modern technology our parents didn't have and they did quite fine.

I don't know if I could do the charting thing, I did the one on baby center last month and it told me when I was ovulating, but if we were ready to try I could not see me planning a deed date

I still think a baby is a blessing and a gift and if its meant to be it will happen.

Baby dust to all who needs it (((******)))))

For people who want to be pregnant yesterday, it is frustrating to 'wait and see what happens' and therefore, charting and temping can help you know your O cycle precisely and like Michele pointed out, it does give you more info - just in case you decide to see a doctor for guidance.

But, I don't think that it's typical for women to get PG so quickly - regardless of whether they are charting or not. (Michele, I am surprised to hear you say that you cried so many times over getting your AF, since you really weren't trying very long - in the grand scheme, you were very lucky!). There are so many other factors that could effect a couple's fertility, that it is a wonder so many of us got PG so soon after stopping BC or beginning to chart/temp, don't you?

For us, we weren't in a super urgent hurry to get PG, but we also weren't sure if we would encounter any fertility problems, so we threw caution to the wind and stopped using BC. I was super sensitive to the fertility problem issue b/c two of my closest friends had been trying much longer and weren't having any success.

I didn't set up to TTC and get pg right away but then that first month passed and AF arrived and I cried. I just wanted this baby sooooo much and kept fearing that there would be a huge problem. I KNOW how lucky I am! I feel blessed everyday.

Oh, Michele...I totally know how badly you want this special little baby, and that you are very grateful for how blessed you are...I just didn't think you would that sensitive about it so early, that's all...I guess I forget sometimes that you are a big mush and not the tough women you are most of the time.

My mother actually use Basal Body Temps (BBT) to get pg in the early 70s!!

Niha, that's so funny.

I started charting when I came of BCp, to make sure I was ovulating, since some people don't just go back to their normal cycles when they go off BCP. I thought I'd dizcovered something new, told my mom about it and she said, 'that's been around forever...'

Re: about the boy/girl thing in TCOYF...

This post has prompted me to come out of the closet as they say. My DH and I have been TTC for several months now- yes, since before the wedding. I have been temp charting since Dec with the help of TCOYF and no success so far. It actually has been really helpful- for instance, I didn't ovulate the week before the wedding (stress I am sure) but was able to see that I did ovulate that cycle, just a week late. Michele, I totally sympathize, I cry too every time I get my AF. I don't want to be so anal about the whole thing, but I have several friends who are going through shots etc now because of the difficulties they are having and it just scares me. I am so happy that there are a group of us here - PG and not PG, to discuss this stuff. I have been needing a sympathetic shoulder lately....

Re: about the boy/girl thing in TCOYF...and other questions

I'm right with you Michele31... I wouldn't say I cried, but I definitely had tears in my eyes when I saw that first BFN. I also get tears when I see other babies. It's a mix between happy and sad tears. Babies just make me happy, and sad because I'm not pregnant. As you know, I've only been trying for a short time, but I get very upset. I feel as if something is wrong with me. You're not alone. I want a baby soooo badly too! I hope you're feeling alright!
