About to book the hall

About to book the hall

Well, I had an appointment on saturday to book the date and sign the contract for a wedding in May 2004. Then my soon to be mother-in-law called. We are trying to cut corners as much as possible because we are paying for the bulk of the wedding. We were having it on a Friday night. She says we are alienating her whole family by doing it on a friday. It will be at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point. Her whole family is from staten Island. She says they will all be stuck in traffic. So now we have to pic a different date on a saturday which is more expensive. So now we are going with the cheeper menu. And no vianese. so we can do a saturday. I hope I get a date. Otherwise we are skrewed and have to wait a year or pay even more to do it in june or july. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Sorry. I just needed to vent. I was finally going to get things started and now it is at a halt again until we can be happy with a date. KILL ME NOW. It is only going to get worse isn't it????

I would do saturday afternoon, but my fiance has only a few requests. And the evening is one of them. He wants an evening reception because he wants that to be everyones night out. We have a lot of party friends and family. And he wants this to be the bis bash, if you know what I mean.

First just breathe and realize that you are going to make it through this period. I am origanally from Tennessee and when I said that I wanted to get married in New York( which has been my home now for 5 years ) I thought that my parents were going to kill me. They were upset because Tennessee would be a cheaper place for the wedding, but my whole life is here. It went on for a month or so and finally it stopped. Now, they are being so supportive. You just have to realize that you can't make everyone happy. Yes , this is a family celebration, but it is about you and your fiance. The people that WANT to be there WILL be there no matter what. Make yourselves happy, you are paying for the bulk of it. I could understand if they were paying for it,but they aren't. You do what you and your FH desire they will come around. Good Luck!!!

We picked Sunday morning (ceremony @ 11:30 AM, cocktail at noon and reception at 1PM) and got a really good price! I would try Sundays if I were you. Saturdays seem to be the more expensive, and you can get better prices for everything else (DJ, limo, photos) if you do Sunday. Just my opinion, and experiance.

Jar823-

My FH was the same way about a 'night' wedding however he was even more specific.. . it had to Saturday Night. . .well after pricing 10 halls all with $20 - $30 per person difference between Friday and Saturday night we opted for Friday.. . .He too had concerns about people get stuck in traffic, not making it to the church etc etc. . . .As I see it, IT'S YOUR (and your FH's) DAY!!!! If people are going to complain about the traffic or don't want to make it to the cermony b/c of work then your wedding isn't that important to them . . . The people you want there and are important to you will be there no matter when you have it. . .We went to a wedding in the middle of the week in Florida, one on a Sunday night Upstate new york, one out east (over an hour away) on a holiday, and one on Staten Island on a Friday night we made it to all of them without complaints because we really cared about these people and WANTED to be there. . .I say do what you want and people will do what they have to ! Sorry this is sooo long

P.S. If you FMIL wants you to change the date have HER pay the difference in price . . maybe that'll change her mind. .

Ignore your FMIL, don't change your plans because of her. If the people that love you really want to be there, they will make either way. Send SAVE THE DATE cards to give them all a heads up of your plans, and continue on as planned... include hotel options and reserve a block of rooms out for them... This is YOUR and YOUR FH's Wedding Day, not her wedding day. Politely remind her of that.

IMO - the people that are going to come are going to come no matter WHAT! So, do what you want and book the day that you can afford/want. It is YOUR DAY!
You can't make everyone happy, so opt to make yourself happy. I can't stress this enough.
Good Luck!

I'm new to this board, but I had to give you some advice...

Just relax and it'll be ok. Look into April...
The guy that we spoke to at Magestic Gardens said that if we were flexible with the date, that April would be $10 cheaper a person...
or... tell FMIL that it's your wedding and you and your fiance are going to do what's best for you.
I have the same problem.. I live out in Suffolk and his fam is in Queens.... I was actually asked by my FMIL why I was going to get married 'all the way out there'..
Just relax... and VENT!

Good Luck!

Don't change your plans because of your FMIL. If she has a problem, tell her to pay for the difference, I bet she'll leave you alone! If not, try a Sunday. I looked at the Majestic Gardens and if I remember correctly it was cheaper on a Sunday, but don't hold me to it. Sundays are usually cheaper. Good luck, and take a deep breath, everything will work out!
