Addressing Invitations

We used Mr. and Mrs. John Doe for the outer envelope and Mr. and Mrs. Doe for the inner envelope

Addressing Invitations

Mr. and Mrs. John Doe on the outer, and Mr. and Mrs. Doe on the inner envelope is what ettiquette says is correct. And if they are marrried but using separate names, or if they are unmarried but living together you would address it: Mr. John Doe Mrs. Jane Smith (using the same format and omitting the first name on the inside) I think you go alphabettically by last name, rather than any specific order by gender.

Addressing Invitations

Ok I see what u mean. I am not having an inner envelope. My question really has to do with whether or not to add the wife's first name.

Using both first names...

I personally think it looks funny to see Mr. & Mrs. and both first names. If you want to include both first names I'd suggest a more casual approach and just go with Jane and John Smith and forgo the Mr. & Mrs. salutation. I did that on some of my thank you notes for people I was closer to.
