FH and I wanted an adult only reception .. however 85% of my OOT guests have children - my sister and dad mentioned that this will cause drama and many may not attend...
our cutoff was going to be 13yrs old... but i honestly feel like my aunt and uncles would be offended .... please advise.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
If you want an Adults only Reception, I say do it! We are.
My son (4 years old) will be the only kid there, and he will most likely be leaving after an hour or two of the reception.
Kids can really add up, and we don't want them taking over the dance floor.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We are doing an adult only reception because 1. it is an evening wedding 2. young children tend to take the spot light on the dance floor and 3. you paying the money for a FORMAL wedding - not a romper room.
I say stay with your age limit and if people don't like it then yes they won't come but the ones that truly want to be there for you on YOUR day will find a babysitter for the night/weekend.
I don't understand why this is such a sticky subject with some people. Our friends are starting to have children and they are looking forward to our wedding for a night to themselves without the kids but yes we did have some family members that were upset as well. We had to draw the line because our list would almost double.
Hope it all works out for you but stay true to what you want. Best of luck!!

Love the idea of the only kids that will be at the reception are the ones in the wedding party, especially if he is your son.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
I wish I could do an adult only reception but it would cause to many problems with my family. My aunt and uncle had an adult only reception and my other aunt and uncle were upset and didn't bother to come. So I would love to have an adult only recpetion but it is not worth the upsetting my family. But we are only inviting my nephews (there in it anyways), and our immediate cousins.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
I'm doing an adult only reception. I have a niece and nephew that will be 3 and 1 1/2 by the time my wedding comes and I made it clear that they can come to the church and take pics only. My brother and SIL have other plans for them (they think they are coming to the cocktail hour), but feelings are going to get hurt. it's your day, do what you want. I've already been called Bridezilla, but I don't care!

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We're having an adult only reception with the exception of our close relatives children. Our first and second cousins can bring their children. That will amount to only 4- 5 children under the age of 10 (including my flower girl and ring bearer). We're also going to arrange to have a babysitter stay in the bridal suite just in case the children want to go to sleep early or the parents want a safe place to put their kids.
I would think about how close you are with the children and how many children would actually be attending. HTH

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
As much as I would love to have children, we just cannot. FH is the only one working right now so we just have to try and cut back in any way possible. If people don't understand, I feel they don't care about me enough anyway so I don't care if they come or not. FOr the most part though we haven't heard any complaints but I think its because they know our situation.
If you know it will cause a problem, you can probably offer to get a babysitter to watch the children....that should be cheaper than adding them....maybe like a responsible teen.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We are definitely having ADULT only. A wedding should be adult only. Its not a place for children. You pay all that money, then you see kids running, and sliding on the dance floor. You hear them in the background of the video. No thank you!! The ONLY one that will be there is his nephew. He'll be 3 1/2 and hes our ring bearer. My flower girl is getting picked up after church. Our cut off is 18. And we said that even if they're 18, not doing 2nd or 3rd cousins. Way too many people and I dont care who gets offended and has a problem with it. They're not paying for it. They dont like it, then they dont have to come

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
I went through the same dilemma as you. All of my OOT guests have children and I was sure they wouldn't come without them. But I just knew that I just couldn't invite the kids. I would have to cute about 30 adults from my list to just invite the children.
I actually sat down with one of the women with kids from OOT and just asked her how she would feel if I didn't invite any kids to the wedding.
She basically said that she thought that kids wound't be invited and that she would appreciate a weekend away without the kids.
I think you would be suprised at how many people would apprcaite a fun night away from their kids. I think having too many kids will be a pain!
You could also on the invitation say that if they have to bring their kids then you could hire a babysitter to stay at a nearby home or hotel for those guests who just HAVE to bring their children.
Good luck

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We are doing an adult only reception . This may sound mean, but I don't want to hear crying, screaming children when we are taking our vows, cause I will be a nervous wreck as it is, and I don't want them running around getting in the way.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
IMO a wedding is no place for children. I had an adult reception with the exception of my flower girl and ring bearer. I say if this is what you want then do it! Your family and friends have more than enough time to make arrangements. I def had some complaints and people decline our invitation bc of this but that was okay with me! I spent alot of money on the wedding and really did not want to deal with kids running around or adults not having fun because they were watching after children. I did offer to book a room across the street @ Land's End Hotel and have them hire a babysitter (that we knew) for the OOT guests' children who needed it but it didn't pan out bc those people either decided to decline or made other arrangements.

Same here! Doing adult reception with the only child being my step daughter who's 4.... i think its a waste of money, weddings are not a place for children costs way too much

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
I am having the same issue. Whether to have kids or not. I decided to leave it up to the parents to decide if they would like their children there or not, simply because I do not want people to get offended if I invite 1 child and not another.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We are having an adult only reception. I actually heard from a lot of adults that they were glad. They are looking at it as a night out without the kids.
Just remember you are NEVER going to make everyone happy. If you even try too you are going to loose all control over YOUR wedding and will end up not having what YOU want in a wedding.

Re: Adult Only Reception or Not?
We are doing adults only. It is causing alot of issues in the family. But I told everyone from out of town that I would be happy to arrange for a babysitter to come to the hotel to watch their children. You have to do what makes you happy. After all... it is your day!
