Advice from runners

I'm looking to start running, and any advice for a beginner would be appreciated. I tried to run yesterday and couldn't go more than1/4 mile without feeling like I was going to collapse.

START SLOW!!! I always used to just start running at a pretty decent pace and then want to die after 5 minutes. So start slow - aka a pace where you can have a full conversation and not be out of breath. My brother gave me this advice - and he has run two NYC marathons. You may even want to start off by power walking and then gradually go into a slow jog. HTH

Thanks! what I have been doing is walking then jogging till I can't anymore then going back to a walk and repeating that. I guess I will slowing be able to build myself up to being able to run for a longer distance.

also try intervals. use a stopwatch and like jog for 3 minutes, walk for 1, jog 3 walk 1. then you can increase it to jog 4 walk 1, jog 5 walk 1. that way you can last longer and increase your indurance. after a while, you will be able to cut out the walking all together!
good luck and congrats!!

i agree with the run walk run walk approach
also STRETCH!!! if you prevent the soreness you will be more likely to keep up with the running!

My friend did a program that she got on runnersworld I think for beginner runners. You start out really slow like 1 minute jog and 2 minutes walk. You do that for 30 minutes and eventually the goal is to be able to run for 30 minutes straight. My friend really was never a runner before and the other day she was able to run 30 minutes for the first time ever!

I never ever thought I would be a runner. Then I found this from some friends and they swore it worked.

It did!

I can officially say that I am a runner because of that program.

HYDRATE! I try to run 3-4 times a week...usually 4 miles a shot. I notice SUCH a difference between days that I'm well hydrated as opposed to days where I drank coffee, diet coke, etc. WATER is so key! I usually try to drink 1.5-2 liters of water....the huuuuuge poland spring is 1.5.

A running buddy usually helps with motivation aka dragging you out on days you're just not feelin it! I have plenty of those.

Enjoy!!

I did the Couch to 5k program a year and a half ago. I was the same, I couldn't even run half a mile. I ran a 5k in under 30 minutes after completing it.

Try out the program, it's great! Also go to runningahead.com. You can track your workouts and map out trails around your house for distance. Good luck!!

I just checked out that program.. It seems easy enough that I can do it. Did you lose any weight while doing it?

Start slow and time yourself. Try running for 5 minutes, then slowly move up to 6, 7, 8...minutes. I started running last year and I was able to run a 5K after a few months of training. Good luck!
