I had to throw out a brand new container of ice cream too. I had meat in the freezer but I guess its ok because it didn't thaw out. We lost power for 12 hours but the food was still frozen when the power came back on.

I only had to throw out a couple of packages of chicken. They were actually still frozen but I was afraid to take any chances. I have gotten sick from chicken twice and it is not fun.

I don't freeze meat so that wasn't an issue, but I did lose a box of Eggo Special K Waffles and a box of Skinny Cows!

We had no power for a total of 5.5 hours. So we really didn't need to throw anything out. I guess we were lucky. Ice cream is a terrible thing to waste

we were out for about 23 hours so it all went in the garbage - didn't want my mind to play tricks on me and make myself sick!!

Sue - 12 hours should be no problem. If you have a good freezer, and do not open it alot, any frozen meat should be good for up to 48 hours. Of coarse ice cream will melt much quicker
Refrigerated items such as milk, cheese, eggs, I would not risk it at all. After a few hours I would say to get rid of these items.

we didn't have to throw anything out from the freezer....everything was still cold. From the fridge, we threw out the milk & eggs.

Re: After blackout:what did you do with food in freezer?
my power was off for about 6 hours. Nothing in my freezer got to the point where it defrosted. I did buy ice to keep stuff in my fridge from spoiling...such as milk, coldcuts..etc.

Re: After blackout:what did you do with food in freezer?
All of my frozen meat stayed frozen but we had to throw out a London Broil that was already defrosting in the fridge and both of our milks went bad as well. After I realized the milk was bad, I ended up throwing out the rest of the dairy too (cottage cheese, mozzerella cheese, etc.).

We were one of the lucky ones-our power came on at 9:30 that night. We didn't throw anything away. I made DH sniff the milk just in case but it was fine.

Re: After blackout:what did you do with food in freezer?
We had just gone food shopping, so my freezer was packed solid w/food. This of course, had me flipping out. Our power was out from 4:15PM Thurs until 1:30AM Fri...less than 12 hours. I heard on the news that the more packed that your freezer was, the greater chance you had of everything staying frozen. So we did not open the freezer at all, and at 2 AM when I checked, even my ice cream was still solid.
However, I tossed the milk, fresh mozzarella, ricotta and cold cuts that were in the fridge.

Everything in our freezer was fine. The ice cubes were still frozen solid!
We just tossed some milk & defrosted chicken from the fridge. The chicken was on its way out anyway and the milk, just in case. Everything else was fine.
